Im getting some one their own .com as a surprise gift.
Now I would like to know whats the best place for getting a domain name and web hosting. I want loads of cool templates to choose from
and easy builder tools to make it simplified. I looked ay lycos and a few others. Im not too worried about price as I am features.

This is not a buissnes site as of yet so Im not really worried about that.
There just seems to be so many to choose from.
I was wondering if some of you here could recommend a good place that has the "GOOD" templates at a reasonable price plan for domain name and hosting ?

1and1.com, it's what I use, very cheap and very reliable.

I use PowWeb. It's a really decent service, and has some great features available.

I *hate* PowWeb because they don't give you a choice whether they'll filter your emails or not--- they just do. And they delete emails with attachments containing certain file extensions--- it's just wrong!

I think you should buy your domain name somewhere other than the host. The host likes to keep your domain if you stop your service. I use GoDaddy for my domains.

1and1.com is a terrible serivice as I myself have also used it along with many of my friends we all agree that it is low quality, especially in comparison to http://bluehost.com

Yes, but they have to give us an OPTION of whether to allow email attachments. If you run a business from your website, you can't afford to have your stupid webhost auto-blocking emails with ZIP files in them

I didn't say they didn't. What I said was you can't turn off the auto-blocking of certain email attachments. There were dozens of threads in their forums back when I had an account there of angry people (myself include) demanding to have the ability to turn this stupid rule off. They wouldn't crack--- almost as if they preferred to babysit us and treat us like we were idiots.

And what different does it make to them?

I've had them for years now and before the mail upgrade that took place a while ago that used to be true. Now if things in the control panel for email are setup correctly it won't block anything. In fact if you haven't used their service in a while check out the updates, there has been a ton of them lately that make the service even better.

sorry but I have to agree I had LOADS of problems when I used to use 1and1 - and their customer service on the phone was very inconsistant. Eventually it got so bad that I asked to swap to a different hosting provider and they refused to let me move the domains to my other hosting provider - I had to threaten to take them to court before they finally handed them over that was about 4 years ago. Infact its their fault that I couldn't get "kangaroo2.com" swapped over (they had already let somebody else register it even though I had a month left before it needed renuing because I had asked for my accoutn with them to be closed. Grrrrrrrrr That was the reason I bough Quikly.com and changed the name of Kangaroo2 studio to Quikly Studio, as the person who owned kangaroo2.com then wouldn't sell it back to me

@ Torq:

I am the owner of SpidaHost and yes I do offer Domain transfers, I haven't implemented the system into my site as of yet but I will do soon.

In the mean time we could setup something via email. I think that my packages will be perfect for you, the special offer that I have on at the moment is perfect for what you described:

Maybe we could sort something out? Email me at sales@spidahost.com or MSN me at stuffitall@hotmail.com.

ps on account of this thread I just checked and Kangaroo2.com was now free, whoever owned it must have let it expire! hahaaaa I've jst snapped it up, with the hosting package suggested to me by Jeju (I think) a while back, all sorted Yay It'll make a good backup for Quikly.com if that has down time

Wow, sounds like you have had a lot of problems with 1and1 then, 'roo The only major gripe I have is the fact that they keep everybody (and me) from browsing the directory. Try www.provosmusic.com/music, anywhere else it'd give you a list of da files in there, but not 1and1.

Course, I've never had to call tech support, so I don't exactly have an unbiased opinion of their services

yeah, the supprt isn't brilliant, and unless you pay for the more expensive hosting options, you have to pay for your phone supprt to. It impressed me that the company I've just bought from is based in america, and yet has a 24 hour free phone support for US and UK companies, I phoned an 0800 (free) number and got through to a guy in america right away, who answered my question They also curtesy called 10 minutes after I paid for my hosting online to thank me personally, nice touch

Wow. How about in US? That'd be about $13(USD) right? Is that still a good deal. Should I even just get a .com address? or would .co.uk work just as well?

Because of the exchange rate from GBP£ into USD$ my Domains are a little more expensive than some of the cheaper registrars around, but if you purchase a Domain from another company you can still use it with my web hosting packages.

If you want to get in touch to discuss this more email me: sales@spidahost.com

Also if you purchase a hosting package from me I'll help you install a decent forum package such as Simple Machines (Demo), much better than proboards and no adverts!
