This sounds pretty cool. I use Ubuntu on a daily basis on my laptop, and it offers a real plethora of features that make it an easy viable option for Windows fanboys. If it weren't for my addiction of PB, DBP and Second Life, I'd be using it 100% of the time.

Anyone else think this is great news? (aside from the dumb name of course)

i was just reading this, and it really depends on what it's for.

Maybe they'll start trying adverts on your desktop? then I wouldn't use it if i were PAID.

But I really like what google has done with a lot of their applications, Slick GUI, easy to use. I'm really excited for this

It's not uber, it's not sexy, and it has nothing to do with peanuts.

Goobuntu is uber, sexy, ubersexy, and while it still has nothing to do with peanuts you'll feel better knowing you are in command of something... sexy.

Since it'd be GPL I think they'd have difficulty putting ads as patches will show up in a day or two for removing them.

DC emulator code size: 2.97B, 232,320 lines... yes, that went down. 15% done.

Who says it will be GPL? Google have released plenty of closed source stuff in the past. I don't see why they would change just because it's running on linux instead of windows.

By way of demonstration, he emitted a batlike squeak that was indeed bothersome.

Oh dear. I dislike Ubuntu a lot. Better off with Mandriva or SuSe. Maybe Debian? Everyone loves Debian.

You clearly don't understand, then. 80% of computer users are not slick and L337 like you and I, therefore they need an easy-to-use alternative to Windows. Right now Ubuntu is as easy and robust as there is for Linux. I'm sure Google could switch to another option in the future if a company releases a better version.

That being said, Google will most likely be fixing Ubuntu bugs themselves to make their G-OS (or whatever) more stable.

Come to think of it, G-OS is a pretty cool name

Meh, I found it far more limiting than windows. Try knoppix for windows likeness. Some friends thought I just installed a custom windows theme

They should stick with Goobuntu. It's cooler than Google OS something moronically obvious like that.

Knoppix is meant as a rescue system OS, not for standalone everyday use.

What? They couldn't work out it's just a combination of Google and Ubuntu? Really now, I thought most people were smart enough to put 2 and 2 together.

"Who says it will be GPL? Google have released plenty of closed source stuff in the past."

Becasue if they are using Ubuntu as a starting point they have to keep it open source under the GPL.

"They couldn't work out it's just a combination of Google and Ubuntu?"
When I read it I took that as a joke

WHY on earth CANT google advertise ubuntu? it shares the ideology of "free" and so on. They just make ALD ANother Linux Distro, and then advertise it like google toolbar. Thats why it goes popular and google can advertise like freaking sea monster, it is full of Ads and people think all linuxes are the same

Quote: "Oh dear. I dislike Ubuntu a lot. Better off with Mandriva or SuSe. Maybe Debian?"

I used first SuSe, I liked it so much that I made a tea shirt of that lizard with my nick on it. When gaining experience, it appereaded more slow, uncustomizable and so on...
Then I moved to mandriva, I liked it a lot also, i think it was better, It liked my radeon, it allowed to choose software at installation (like suse), but compiling from source was not nice, becouse it shipped with small ammount of libaries, and they were hard to install. Then it was starting to remind SuSE.
Then I moved to ubuntu. Oh quash it was weird, Gnome was not for me (not tuning) and well, the system was also a bit weird for me (not used to fake root). I didnt like it a lot, i thought it was just ALD
Then I saw kubuntu, it hit me like a deja vu. that was the distro which everything is perfect for me. Now Im using it as a Java for mobile learning tool, and it works great.

The Ubuntu Core is a Deb based distro...and Suse?...

Google is obviously just trying to grasp the most popular distro at the moment...which happens to be the Ubuntu project...they can go for it...but i dont know how smart it is yet...

Who am i...i don't know anymore...its been a long time since ive walked here...

I *know* but base debian is so much more leet. SuSe is a fun operating system for beginners. I would recommend it far more than ubuntu to beginners:/

90% of computer users don't care about being "leet", because they're not 11 years old hacker-wannabes. They're average people who just want to use the computer for surfing and email.

With this bit of news I've been thinking of using Ubuntu now on my old computer just for kicks and giggles. At least, until Google finally is able to officially announce this and then later release it.

that is, IF they are really making it, there's a Google OS rumor every other day aparently
just check Google Images

but, Google would get a LOT of attention if they DID make an OS...

"

I was saying that is was too easy for me. Actually it has been made too easy to be fully functional and fast. (If somrone would have came to me and say that other distros rule when I was using mandriva I would say extactuly the same ;P)

Let me quote myself: but compiling from source was not nice, becouse it shipped with small ammount of libaries, and they were hard to install.
Okay i was I bit unclear. The libaries what didnt ship with it (what you cant find with package manager) were hard to install. (TYPO)
Main reson I changed it was that It wasnt fast (I managed to get programs crash 15 times during a month). Thats more like windows-style.

I dont want to argue what distro is the best becouse people are different, aliens are different, even cows are different and they eat different grass. And green aliens like to kidnap cows while grays like to kidnap people.

BTW anyone used Google talk? I think that if they have same artist and desinger that Goobuntu will have, we will have a very different distro . White, simple, light, only do one thing. I think that one thig is going to be "google search".
