Because apparantly, the original DS was still to big for most Japanese gamer's hands, and they decided to reduce the size to only 60% of the original. Who would have thought?

The way things are looking out so far, this thing might not be GBA compatible. *JeKu bursts into tears in background*

Great excuse to jack the price back up again and earn some monnnaaaaaay.

From the picture, it looks like the screens will stay the same size and the rest of the unit will shrink. If thats true, I'll certainly be getting one, as I keep very nearly buying a ds, and then not cos I can't get over the fact they are so ugly and tacky looking to hold... some great games that I really want though so this might be a good solution for me.

PS. Its already been confirmed by Nintendo that they WILL be compatible with GBA games!

nintendo only survive by releasing 2-3 different consoles of the same system, so within 1-2 years there will be another DS console.

look at gameboy/gameboy advance for example. they know portable consoles are a real money maker.

only really for nintendo - sega, atari, snk, bandai, watara and countless others have released some great portable consoles which all lost them loads of money. The PSP is the closest anyones ever got to beating nintendo, but looks to be fast loosing its share in the market nowadays...

the gmeboy micor is a shrunk gba not ds. And yeah the new DS is a LOT smaller than the DS, 60% of the size. So long as they don't make the screens smaller, that will be a good thing

Myself I don't see a point with re-releasing it. The only thing they need to add to the DS is original GB/GBC compatibility.

The reason I don't play with my DS in public is not because it's ugly (I think it looks great, actually), but because I don't want to be mugged when I walk off the bus or SkyTrain afterwards :-P

I actually think it's quite clever.

Imagine all the kids who didn't get a DS for Christmas, seeing their pals with one, and wanting one - but not wanting to look like they're just copying the ones who already have them. What better 'excuse' for them, than to get the new one. They pay to get to play with their friends, but get instant 'cool' for having the new one.

It's another excuse for those people to pick one up, without looking like they missed the bandwagon. Clever, imo.

Yes I agree with Tinkergirl. Thats the main reason Nintendo releases lots of verions of the same portable hardware over time, cos the console is like a playground status symbol, just like what mp3 player, mobile phone etc you have. That and of course all the older Nintendo fan bwouys who "must" buy every new and diffrernt coloured version to have in their collection and keep mint unboxed in their attic...

I'm going to buy one because I actually need one, my DS is all scratched up and I'm starting to get some dead pixels so it would seem however I've decided to wait until Lite comes out to get a new one.

Thats exactly what I worried about when I heard it was gonna have a touch screen - lcds don't like being hit

I played and completed Warioware: Touched, and there's still not a scratch on mine. Warioware: Touched and Project Rub are some of the most stylus-centric games I've played (and finished) and I've been very impressed with the solidity of the little monster.
Nice little machine.

And, of course, don't forget that most games (if not all) allow you to play with the D-Pad if need be. Advance Wars DS, for example, is easier and better with the regular D-Pad and buttons.

where I live (or certainly where I used to), you'd be shot for carrying a psp, simply so they could steal it and sell it same with ipods and various mobile phones, only really safe to use at home, which defies the point lol

Yes there's very few games I've played where I would choose to use the touch screen over other control methods, its often put in there as a "novelty" control method, or a token to Nintendo, rather than being used properly

What the hell is wrong with kids nowadays, where they label you because of the gadgets you have. I remember that happening in elementary school, like, grade 4 when I didn't have the newest name brand runners. But kids nowadays have iPods and PSPs, whereas the "losers" have RCA Lyras and NDS'. WTC.

People just give you queer looks if you pull out a ds in my school. It's like wearing a pokemon shirt to school. The problem isn't that the ds is a bad system, it just looks ugly as hell when compared to a psp or an ipod. That's probably one of the major reasons people are going to get this. It looks as sexy as an ipod, and will be far less associated with kiddy stuff.

I have a friend, who thinks that the ds sucks compared to the psp. Of course all he knows about them is the graphics, but it's still pretty funny. When I told him that the psp wasn't making nearly as many sales as the ds, he said "well it should be."

I'll definitely going to get the ds lite, because I use my ds enough to be psyched by all its improvements.

The PSP can produce very grainy, and in some case similar to DS graphics, only with texture filtering (which the DS lite should have in my opinion)

yes I agree. Sorry but the DS is an ugly console, and thats probably the major reason I haven't bought one yet. I smaller nicer one will be better, as long as the screens stay the same size, I'd definitely uby one,m cos there's some great DS games I'm dying to play.

*blinks*

Wait - people mock you because of what handheld console you have??

And, what - people really consider the appearance of a handheld when purchasing it? Not the games, the support, the potential - it's down to the look of the thing??

That never even entered into my mind. I am honestly quite stunned. I didn't even consider the DS to be ugly - or nice looking - it's a means to an end, not an end it itself.

lol

With a home console, the look isn't important to me - I have bought an xbox and a ps2 under the full belief that they are exceedingly ugly bits of hardware (whereas I like the look of the gc, dc and ps1/psx)

With a handheld console however, it DOES matter, because instead of staring at the television, I have to stare at the console itself. The plastic quality of the ds looks very poor, and some parts of the design are clumsy, poorly designed and overly large. To my taste, ninendo's design of handheld consoles is usually a thing of beauty but the ds is really rather clunky to hold, cheap looking, and poorly designed. The hardware inside is great, I love what they are doing with it, and I have played some really cool and original games on friends and relative's units. But the little things that niggle me about it annoy me to much to buy one for my own regular use.

The PSP is beautiful to look at, but there are some serious internal design flaws, and a stupid price tag which put me off buying one for long term use, so out of the two I'm more likely to buy a ds. In fact I was seriously considering getting one soon so I can play a few of the games I want for it. However now there's a new design, I may well wait to see if I like the new one better, as being I'll have to look at it for long periods of time, I'd rather it looked "nice" and like I'd spent money on something that has been designed, (and built) properly

Ditto.

I actually think the DS is quite attractive--- am I the only one? It's not like I'm marrying the thing, or glueing it to my face. Honestly, if you're insecure about what strangers think of you because you have a DS and not a PSP, then somebody needs a self-esteem boost

Don't get me wrong, the ds is probably my favorite game system ever. I could care less what it looks like. The problem is that in school everyone who doesn't own a ds does. And I don't like it when half the nerds in around flock to me when they see me playing a ds. It can get kinda creepy when a bunch of people are standing over you breathing heavily.

Ok, ya forced me to do it excuse the 10 minute hash up rush psp job!

I know there's the issue of making everything fit underneath, but from what I've seen of the nds innards there's lots of wasted space. Perhaps this new one will be better designs, being 60%, I reckon it'll bw similar to my first re-design.

lol u mean on my sp style designs? I always found the sp to be the most comfortable of the gameboys, especially with the shoulder buttons on the back. But Nintendo went with my first suggestion of removing all the wasted space i see I'll most probably but on of these new ones as soon as a decent ubs ram cartridge comes up for development and putting videos/mp3s on (At the moment the ones I've seen don't allow multiple game saves and the flash is stored in the gba slot - pretty useless but its early days )

I don't think the DS is ugly, but then again, I have it for its games and functionality, not its looks. And I did play it public, and the guy sitting near me was interested in which games I had. (Of course, it was in a comic shop, so if indeed it is a "nerd" system, which I don't agree with, then that location would be fairly biased.)

Sorry for the bump guys, but...

soapyfish posted the new images but they died. New picture here:

Is it just me, or does that look no-where close to the promised "60% of original size"?

It just looks like it had it's edges trimmed by 1cm. This is lame as hell.
