Hi there

Sorry if the title doesn't say it. This is regarding games in English played by people of other languages.

Can you imagine how it must be for those people to play games like No One Lives Forever, Deus Ex, GK3 etc... and be able to understand it?

How do you, fellow developers, think that our games should enable this (besides translations)?

There are more Japanese games that aren't translated into English than the other way round.

Fortunately most places in the world speak English as a second language and are taught it in schools, so its not too much of a problem. Most games are localised into native languages anyway, but most people around the world recognise "start" "game over" "round 1" etc, many foreign games still use English for phrases like that becasue they are so common.

Of course with adventure and rpg games text is more important, but you can still get a lot in there by using icons etc that are obvious in what they do, and by facial and vocal expression.

Yes, but just imagine what it must be like to be Dutch and not be able to understand what is being said in a game? I'm not saying it's a horrific scene. I'm just saying, think about what it would be like to play some adventure game without understanding a word being said - you know... like an experiment.... How do you think they (the non-English speaking people) would get around? What key factors influence their ability to understand?

I once got "Grandia" for the Saturn on import knwoing no Japanese whatsoever. It was amazing how much I could interpret and guess dow to certain factors, mostly being normal game "logic" but also the changes in sound effects and music and expressions of the characters face and physical movements. Of course, eventually it was translated into English and released on the pc, and I found I'd missed out on a lot, but it was still fun to play and not overly frustrating when I didn't know what was going on

I got this emulator once and all the Games were in Japonese, the action ones wern't hard to understand, but RPGs need to be in a spoken language. But there are also alot of games that are made by people for a specific groups, like for instance Dofus is bilingual.

A good sulution I noticed on the Xbox, is that lots of games will detect what language your Xbox is set to and the game will have subtitles in the other langauge or dubb it. So that means some one in england who speaks french can just set their Xbox to french and play, Kinda Cool.
