I hate it when I get virus emails, and the subjects like 'RE: hello' and then the text's like 'Message could not be sent - please see attached file'...I mean seriously, they should come up with something a bit more original/believeable than that lol

You can't get a virus from opening a message. Unless your stupid enough to use Outlook.

Was it watching the news, or reading your email?

As all messages currently only accept limited HTML code, no. But the question you are raising is it an Email? It is possible to direct a file at the Email server you use, but then you need a specific virus for each server (possibly). The idea is that you aren't opening an EMAIL, you are opening a File that is disguiesed as an email. Question is, is it possible?

You can put in all the javascript you want, that I know, gets blocked. So if not by a curropt version of an email, then how can opening a message give you a virus. The attachments aren't even automated. And if they auto-open, it is as a txt file.

I think Word does a pretty good job all on it's own. Unbelievable how rubbish the latest version (2003) we use at work is. Incredibly stupid program (tries to give you what you want and constantly fails to get it right) that once apon a time (about 2000) was actually pretty good (most of the time guesses correctly or allowed you to change easily). Maddening program. Bring back WordStar 4.0, all is forgiven. Heh, I remember when we all used to curse Word (around 1993 I believe) because they made us at least look at it in Uni. We all loved Latex (oh yes) at the time with some other postscript viewer thingy (memory failing...). Was great for programmers because it effectively was like a programming language for documents. Top stuff. You even compiled your program into Postscript to print and view. Heh heh. Even got a manual around here somewhere.....

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

I must be half stupid and I dont have a virus checker.

Having said that, I dont have a virus either.

I figure I must be intelligent half the time though, because sometimes I collect my emails from my Apple Mac.

Virus emails can be executed as attachments because the email body can use HTML to trigger it. If people are unfortunate enough to use Outlook, they should always turn of that preview pane that instantly opens the email and seemingly looks for viruses to infect you with.

Good spam filter software is hard to find, we use Workgroupmail at work and it sucks - it'll filter out about 80% of Chinese emails with it's profanity filters yet penis enlargements are a-ok according to it!.
