hi,

just posting this to inform people of what happens if you do not renew your domain(s)! currently i noticed that an old domain of mine "dbforums.co.uk" has been snapped up by someone else and has a price tag of $4000~ on it.

the story started when i kept receiving emails about my domain will expire in 30days so i contacted the company i had it signed upto, they said i can either let it die or get it renewed only. i asked for it to be transferred to another domain provider, they asked for a "fee" for transferring it. i said no way im gonna pay that and decided to let the domain expire. what they failed to tell me was they keep it for 3 months before they finally expire it.

so right now 3 months has passed and the domain is gone! no contact to say "we will be opening the domain to the market again" just dropped it. clearly whoising the domain right now shows it's a company that snaps up expired domains and the ip claims to have 600,000 other websites on it.

currently the fear is i have other domains by that same domain provider that have also expired, including my lagmaster.net domain! i fear i will lose all my decent domains and will have to start a fresh with new domain names.

this could happen to anyone who thinks their domain provider fees are extorionate and decides not to pay the transfer fee. my advise is:

- read their toc/tos
- read up any fees there are including the fee to transfer (if needed!)
- ask them about what happens to the domain if you fail to renew it.
- check how they change domain settings, like dns and nameservers. either it's automatic online, or they have to do it manually after you fill out the form.

so right now i've gotta contact them about the lagmaster.net domain and i will pay whatever money there is to move it so i can keep it.

I have a domain that expires in (I know I've left it late...) 2 weeks. Earlier this week I unlocked it and started the transfer process with Namesco to transfer it to them. Hopefully shouldn't have much of a problem.

I registered designingthe.net with 123 reg (I think) a coupel of years ago. Cost £40 for 2 years.

Recently I've been using simply.com (namesco) who charge only £19 for two years and are great.

Namesco charge £10 for transferring a domain to them and have this handy online form to do it. So I've applied and hopefully sometime next week things'll get sorted.

Hope it works out for you lag. If you need a domain registrar I highly recommend simply.com.

That really blows dude, i'm sorry to hear it. Strange how the name was taken so quickly, though.

the registrar is probably in cahoots with this other company thats holding the domain hostage. sounds illegal to me but that doesnt seem to matter these days.

sorry they did that to you Lag.

The same thing strangely occurs with some providers when buying a new domain too ... If for example you try to register a domain name but have issues with their site accepting your credit card or and have to come back the next day, as happened to my Dad.

Oh one further fought, you can write to the domain name registry people, I forget who they are, and explain the situation in writting and they should recognise you as the legal owner of the domain.

That's how the whole s**.com scandal occured, because the guy wrote to them and said "hey this is mine" - although in that case they did not check and gave it over to the criminal party, I think they're a bit more thorough now .

Yes, keeping an eye on domain renewals can be infuriating at times. At work we have to juggle with nearly 500 domains that all expire at different times and for different clients. Luckily most of them are registered at same place and we get regular emails and updates about upcoming renewal deadlines.

My 8 personal domains I have registered with 1&1 together with my hosting, and they just take the money automatically every year from my debit card, which makes things nice and easy.

Boo!

My domain expires end of next week and it's in the middle of a transfer (the ball is rolling, things seem to be going well).

Will I make it? I hope so
