Anybody that has bought the game, or just owns the demo of Dumbo & Cool - http://www.Drewsgames.com/dac/ , now's your chance to suggest features for the next upgrade!

The second major upgrade is due for 15th of February, and I have the following 5 days to work on it.

Features already under way

- New control style and scheme
- Level editor and custom time attack level loading

Any suggestions welcome. Keep them realistic, this is just an upgrade, not a sequel.

Incidentally, there are 'official' forums for Dumbo & Cool: http://www.forumcircle.com/dac1/, where you can report bugs etc... and find out about future upgrades first.

Voices were horrifically expensive and judging by my small double figure turnover thusfar, I will NOT ever invest in voice actors ever again ever.

Any real suggestions?

wow nice, looking forward to the upgrade

My real "want" was a level editor, so I guess I'm already getting one

With the new control system, will the old one be there too? I like the old one, it feels more like a traditional console game I know many people wanted mouse based looking and turning though, maybe theres room for an option for both?

I would personally like a pause menu, that doesn't lose your game as soon as you press escape (I believe this has been picked up by a couple of reviews aswell if I'm not mistaken)

yay! Well, you already know what I want added...

I e-mailed the tgc on why there wasn't an article on d&c yet, and they said I should write a review and send it to them... think I should do it?
It seems really lazy, especially when they have the full game.

...What if you get enough turnover for the game... Then will you have voices in the sequel?

lol I thought that innitially too But it raises all sorts of nasty liscence issues, especially as d&c is a commercial project. How about a female character called KT Homes instead?

It would be cool if you added that new water effect, but that's competely up to you. Also, if you can you should try and shorten the load times.
Oh yes, Drew, you should really make a level select so that you can replay a level after you've beaten it. And a great feature would be a sort of movie gallery, where you can watch cutscenes that you've seen already.

edit: BUY DUMBO & COOL!!! D&C is a great game, and at $10 there's little reason not to get it.

One nice control scheme I saw recently is on Stubbs the Zombie - that lets you look around with the mouse and move with the WASD keys - like straffing etc, it felt really natural.

I think that D&C would benefit from mouse look too, because it's nice to stop and look around, scan the level for coins, stuff like that. It might not be ideal for the puzzles and jumps you have, but it's worth a try and it does make these games more accesible for PC gamers.

Another feature I think would work is allowing an easy setup for XBox controllers - a lot of people use old XBox pads with USB adapters on their PC, it's possible to access all the functions in DBPro, and it's becoming a nice standard as it's a very cheap way to get a good controller in your PC (the PC pads you'd get for £5 are really crud in comparison). One person on keys+mouse and one on a controller would be great.

Good luck, hope your adjustments are enough to get a publisher on-side.

Dear VanB; how much are these USB adapaters of which you speak?

Furthermore, there is mouselook already, and mouse control is also on my list - I'm going to need like a screen where player 1 and player 2 pick there control methods like in a fighting game where they pick characters.

The XBox thing sounds neat man I'd love to play on an XBox pad.

Oh, I made another sale today through Plimus. Neat.

I think they're only £5 from GAME, or you could get busy with an old USB cable - you have to go looking online for a driver, but it's only 4 wires to match up .

By mouse look, I meant that it would play a bigger part in sideways control - like if you turn the camera a little to the left, the player smoothly turns to that direction, but if you strafe, it's more like a FPS game. Might be tricky to explain how you can strafe in roller blades, but it might work.

I was doing something similar, with straffing - what I think I'll do in the end is post a demo on here (a small filesize) with all the different control schemes and get feedback on what works and what doesn't.

Back to work,

maybe you could disable the strafing for the rollerblades? (forcing the player to turn with the mouse) but still use it on everything else...

Well, everybody, we now have both Mouse support and Keyboard support

I'm going to a friends house now to steal a JoyPad to get that going, too.

[edit] JoyPad support is finished! Now to add it all into the Options menu so the player can choose how he (or she) wants to play!

Hey Drew, on the thing about the voice actors, I personally think the quality shows through well in the proggy ... BUT, even though I know it's a pain in the arse, I'm pretty sure you could recruit amateurs to do a similar quality job. So I think your decision to not go with paid voice actors in the future is probably not a bad one at all.

You could hold auditions on the forum! That could be fun actually. Post a line or two and get people to record them saying them. That way you can judge the quality of their voice acting and recording hardware and then pick from a bunch of people. Offer them the usual shizzle of name in the credits, and if you're generous, a percentage of takings, or small fee upon sale. I'm sure most of us would do if for free though as, as much as those guys may charge, it's gotta be a fairly piss easy job (cheeky bastards).

Anyway, not to slag off your choice for the game, cos like I said, the quality showed through and it was cool, BUT, I reckon there are other possibilities. You might have to wade through the voices of some complete retards to find the gems, but it could still be done.

Edit: Obviously I'm not suggesting this for D&C now. Just for future projects.

Hopefuly, you'll make enough money on d&c to be able to get the same people for the voises in d&c2. New vioses could be done by amitures as long as thier good, but I'd hate to see d&c have different voices (or lose them altogeather) in the sequel.

I'm all for amateur voice actors. Does anybody remember 'Impress Martin' in The Old Remedy like 2 years back?

Oh man that was a funny day... Or, if you love bad voice acting: http://www.drewsgames.com/time.htm

Yeah of course I'll get the same voice actors for D&C2 but there's unlikely to be D&C2

Anyway upgrade work continues.

I thought the voice actors were cool. What D&C needs is some hot chicks with steaks on a plate. Like if you beat the level, boom! Theres a hot chick with some steak for ya.

Also I think toon shading was a VERY good suggestion, it would bring it to life more. the movie i hought was good and the voce acting not bad. Id be very interested to see thes ehtings incorperated into dumbo and cool.

Just to be moody I quote:

Toon shading is not only a pet hate of mine, but it means I'll have to redo all the game's film sequences (which are pre-rendered by the way), and raise the game's minimum specs because toon-shading is heavy. Oh yeah, and toon-shaded characters might look a tad out of place if nothing else is 'toon shaded'.

Got turned down by another publisher, as well...
