G'day!

Just preparing myself for a butt-numbing couple of flights taking nearly 24 hours to travel to Melbourne for a 3 week holiday. Yipee!

Then got a few hours drive when we get there to travel to our relations who live in the middle of nowhere a few hundred miles East of Melbourne.

See you in a few weeks time.

Boo!

I hear there's no high-speed internet in the outback, better take a [deleted word] [added: ] parabolic reflecter with a LNB¹ at it's epicenter, tuned to the KA microwave band, with matching transciever and modulator/demodulator!

Not necessary: I'm sure they have cutlery there. I mean come on, they aren't THAT far behind as a civilization.

Bloody hell that must be a bit dangerous, having a liquid nitrogen bomb on it.

Don't worry, we don't take offense at such petty things like that. Now Spooky, on a completely unrelated note, would you be landing at the Tullamarine or Essendon Airport? *Cocks shotgun*

Oh, and your picture is incorrect, it's currently raining here. Yes, that's right, raining in the middle of Summer, in 40 degree celcius heat. Enjoy your stay.

So if Spooky is stuck at Uluru, surrounded by a pack of angry kangaroo's, I think he'll agree a fork may be useful at that time...

The proceeding post before my fork was was changed - the poster suggested taking a dish. Whilst a dish is useful, a dish & fork is more useful. After all, you can eat of it in a fairly civilised manner.

It's Tullamarine airport, and yes we've been told the weather is a bit iffy. Even been warned to take jumpers coz it gets cold in the evening. So much for a nice warm holiday.

Maybe a spork would be more practical. then I could stab the kangaroos to death and then scoop out their eyes.

I'm staying at relatives most of the time and I know they have some sort of internet connection but I bet it's really slow dialup.

Also spending nearly a week doing deep sea fishing and some estuary fishing in a place called Batemans Bay up towards Sydney. Hopefully I catch the biggest fish so i can brag about it for rest of hols.

Nearly time for the joys of hanging around Heathrow for hours and hours getting bored out of our skulls.

When I get back I really hope U6 has progressed nicely and at least a beta version is ready to test, but I won't hold my breath.

Oh well, better finish my packing.

I propose a social experiment. The moment you set foot on Australian land, come out with as many stereotypes, platitudes and clichés as you possibly can. Time how long it takes before someone gets visibly annoyed with you.... or offers to play knifey spoony.

re faze - When I was there (well, mainly in urban Melbourne, but also rural for a few days), I didn't actually see one Aboriginie (<sp?). Have a good time spook, t'can be good fun over there. The problem with living there for a year is that they get all of the technology between 3 and 8 months later than in the US (and I think a month or two, or coinciding with EU releases). There I was, complaining that Japan gets stuff way before us.

Anyway, have a good time.

I know where sale is, that's pretty far from melbourne. Also tullamarine airport isn't all that far from my house. Will you actually be staying in melbouren for a while, im sure exeat and I could say hi. and uluru is in the northern territory, so unless he was heading way north and inland on his holiday I think the kangaroos there will leave him alone.

Yeah, Sale is hours away. Out in the sticks basically, not much there (certainly not broadband internet), although it is close to the coast. Although I live in Melbourne, I can't say it's too close to where you'll be staying, simply observe this highly accurate and to-scale map (for a sense of scale, Sale is about 3 hours from the city, whilst I'm about 20 minutes from it):

Note: I didn't actually realise 'Ramsay St' was filmed so close to where I live, it's about a 5-10 minute drive from the looks of it. Had to look this up, but it's really called Pin Oak Court (most 'dead end' streets are called a court) and it's located in Vermont South. I'm not sure what kind of access is available but theoretically you could probably go and have a look, afterall, I believe most of the scenes in the show are inside (filmed in a studio) and not on the street.

As for Aboriginals, there are a high population of them in certain areas. Western Australia and the Northern Territory (home of Uluru/Ayers Rock) mainly, there aren't so many in Melbourne, although you may see a few in the city. Although, I don't see what the 'attraction' is, it's not like they walk around in their tribal clothes or anything.

Haha, welcome down-under, mate!

If you're going anywhere near Bathurst, stop by the University so we can grab us a VB and check out some sheila's!

But seriously, Melbourne's a most messed up place, Central Coast's much better... Sunny, close to beach's everywhere, and plenty of pubs/clubs without all the annoying bustle of the city

Have fun and don't forget your kangawalafox spray, 'cos when you're out in the sticks, them and Drop-Bears are you what you have to look out for!

Got back Sunday morning but still a bit light-headed. Back to work properly on Tuesday.

Weather was brilliant except for first few days where long sleeved shirts were order of the day, but rest of hols were a nice comfy 23 deg or so, with a few days around 30, a couple around 35 and one scorcher of a day at 42.

One thing I was really impressed with is the tidyness of all the towns and cities we went to. Absolutely no litter anywhere - really quite weird. Other thing is that every town, however small has public conveniences, and they were spotlessly clean - was quite unexpected.

Beer was cheap - VB and Carlton Draught were my firm faves, together with copious amounts of red wine.

Food everywhere was fantastic and you certainly get a good plateful for your money. Puts our coutries efforts to shame. Dissapointed to see such large numbers of mcdonalds, kfc, hungry jacks (burger king).

Out in the sticks is certainly a good description of where we stayed. Couple of miles along a dusty dirt road, over a rickety bridge, up a hill, down a hill. Weird to have your letter box a good car drive from your house! Also weird to stay somewhere without mains water - Water is collected off rooftop and pumped from river and stored in big tanks. This is what you wash and shower with.

I did get to stay in Melbourne for a few days and thought it a great city. Did all the touristy things like drive around the F1 track, go up the Rialto building, visit aquarium, federation square, casino, go on trams, see all the stadiums and commonwealth games preperations.

Also popped up to Narooma for a few days and did some charter boat fishing a couple of times and some lake fishing.

Even managed to pop into Canberra for a day but wasn't very impressed. Good view from the Telstra tower though.

Got to see all the trademark aussie animals though like kangaroos, wallabies, koalas (on Raymond Island), and all sorts of pretty birds like parrots, rosellas, kookaburras, cockatoos, etc

The only drawback was the insane number of flies that constantly attack you and just love buzzing in your ear or try getting into your eyes. There are also BIG flies and mozzies that love biting you, specially around the ankles. These bites last ages and are very itchy.

So a very enjoyable trip indeed, made even better by a 750 dollar win on the pokies in a local club! So if you have the time and money I highly recommend you pop over there for a long holiday.

Oh well, back to the cold weather of Essex and the daily hassle of work.

Boo!

I'm a huge fan of Australia. I particularly like Perth. I like the fact that only the Australians could be loony enough to build such a beautiful smallish city in the middle of nowhere. That is class.

Plus, being a Brit in Australia is like being a Brit in the United States - you have an automatic advantage with the laaaaadies based on the misperception that you are somehow more cultured and urbane than the local lads. Muhahahahaha.

Although of course in my case I was only trying to chat up the female bears.

Yah it's quite opposite for us :-( When I went to England I was asking a girl about the city of Bath, as it was the most beautiful English city I visited. I of course was pronouncing it bahth. She gave me a stern look and said "No! It's BAWTH!."

*cries* But at least I was happy when one fellow recognized my accent as Canadian and not like the countless others who said "So you're American, huh?"

I have been told that too, and from the 4 provinces I've been to I couldn't agree more

Would love to visit England again, but would need to go on one of those tours as their driving scares the crap out of me (four-lane roundabouts, no thanks )

Australia would be great too...
