I've never had any luck with portable music players. I've had 4 in the last 3 years and I've broken all of them (2 CD players, a Minidisk player and a Hi-MD player). So I've decided to give up on media based players and get an mp3 player.

Now I've got two in mind. Either the 1Gb iRiver u10 or the 2Gb iPod Nano. Both are the same price (£139) but the u10 plays videos (albiet at only 15fps). I could get a 1Gb iPod nano for £109, but I'm just not sure.

So basically, what's your opinion on MP3 players for about £100-£140. Baring in mind I don't need something with a huge storage capcity as my collection doesn't even hit 5Gb and most of that I don't even listen to.

On ebay there are sellers selling foreign ipod nano "clones" that also have mp4 video playback for 15-30 pounds each plus postage and insurance. I bought a 1gb pink one in a metal casing styled like the nanos for my wife last month and I have to say the build quality and play is excellent, it cost me 70pounds all inclusive, which I think is a bargain, although how long it will last remains to be seen, from first impressions its excellent

Heres a picture of one, they are in cool metal casing and play mp3, mp4 video and have fm radios. This one is 34.99 buy it now, plus postage and insurance, from the seller "bigbargaintown" - there are plenty of other sellers with similar models, just search for "mp3 player 1gb" or "mp3 player 512mb" etc for cheaper models.

I have had bad experiences with all the apple ipods I've ever bought due usually to hard disk failures. However the Nanos are flash based and therefore shouldn't have those problems. If you want an official ipod I'd go for one of those

People seem to like the clone of the ipod called the zen i-Pod are good in quality, I know people found the nano screens were prone to breaking but I think they were quick to fix it, as I said the zen is a good mp3, also, the PSP , I wouldn't buy the one my friend has (forgot what it is called) he got it for christmas and it worked for a while, and suddenly stopped working, and then his Dad bought him a new one, same happened. People say to me why did I get an iPod when I can get a zen with more space for cheaper, couldn't answer him, but I wasn't the one who payed for the shuffle, has it been an ipod video I wouldv'e had an answer

I think if I was going to buy a new branded one I'd buy the Sony Walkman mp3 players, I've heard nothing but good things about them, unless other people have?

PDAs make good MP3 players. Better than anything else, because if a new format comes out you can download the player!

I'd go for an iriver over an ipod any day. I had an iriver a while back and the sound quality was excellent. Good quality players.

@Kangeroo2 BETA2: don`t forget Sonys attitude to drm and copyright, I bought a Sony minidisk player a few years back and while the idea is ok the anti copy stuff built into it is excruciating, for example it won`t copy some disks at all...those it does it refuses to copy tracks off the same cd inside of an hour of one another (it actualy refuses...with a message telling you you have to wait an hour ), it seems to create bad artifacts in Mpegs copied to the minidisk etc, plus their poor anti-customer attitude re copyright and the consumer has decided me to NOT buy any Sony products from now on, I urge you to do the same, theres lots of innovative stuff about nowdays, look at the Archos, Creative or Philips line ups, I-river seem to have some interesting stuff too, although I havent seen much about localy.

I got my Creative Zen Micro (5gb) for $125 before shipping, it was worth every penny, it has a fm radio built in, fm recorder, and a voice recorder which is handy for school...its plenty small, its also PlaysForSure compatible, so you know it'll work for your song library

EDIT: sorry, just read youre price range wrong, id still suggest looking into the micro if you decide not go with the video function...
