The time grows ever closer for me to start choosing my courses and choices of University, but the problem is I have only the vaguest idea of what I want to do. I know it will obviously be in something computer related. But with the array of choices seemingly in the hundreds, I think I need a bit of help choosing what to spend the years doing. So, if people with experience in the Computing industry could give me tips on what to look for, what to avoid, where the money is or anything helpful like that.

All help is appreciated!

Thanks,
Conor

Would help if we knew where you live Cyberspace boy....

Personally my Uni had 5000 students, in a town of 10000 (that included the students). We also had about 70 pubs by the time I left. Thats a pretty good ratio Also the bird to bloke ratio was mightly impressive compared to other Unis I looked at. All other considerations were there just to please your parents/ future employers.

Cheers

I live in Kettering, which is in the East Midlands UK, sorry. What sort of courses would be the best to take? (Considering future employability)

@Dazzag
Have you got any DarkPlace on DVD? I love that show and bought a shoddy DVD-R from Ebay, but the users no longer registered

There are loads and loads of degrees you could take, last I heard you could get a degree in David Beckham, well I would consult a careers advisor or Connexions, I mean I already plan to do some sort of writing course in literature. What do you want to do as a career?

I went to Uni of Essex in Colchester to do Computer Science. The experience as a whole was unforgetable, however I really do not like the Uni and the way it is run. The computing department there is really poorly managed from my experience.

If you want to do Computer Science, iirc the three top are Cambridge, Warwick and York. I remember reading that York gets more funding to do CS releated research than any other university in the UK. Living in the midlands that could be an option.

Nope. Doesn't exist yet. I considered getting it from eBay as it has been so much time it's unbelievable, but I heard there isn't a decent copy around. Should have Sky+'ed it at the time, but didn't realise it would never appear again *ever*. Hopefully will appear one day. In the meantime my avatar will have to do....

Actually have you seen the IT crowd? Has the bloke who played Thornton in it. Not bad. Not Darkplace (what is?), but not bad <assume Dagless pose>.

Cheers

Yeah my versions very naff on episode three (The eyeball baaby one), ironically, the only one I missed. I have seen IT crowd, dont think much of it though. Ayoade (Thornton) directed Darkplace unbeleivably. Big fan of Chris Morris too, but his parts in IT Crowd aren't as major as Id like them to be

Wasn't he called Skipper or somesuch name? Or was that his own baby that was half grasshopper or something?

BTW, did you watch any of that Stephen King horror series set in a hospital? Scaringly similar (including the little buggies that go through dark corridors), except Darkplace was pretty good (suprising since I used to love King before he got run over). Especially when all the speech is said in a *certain* way. I'm sure you know what I mean. Very "smoke me a kipper". Another class character (from a totally different series - gold star to who can name the series and character fact fans...).

All I would say is, before you choose a pure Computing degree such as Computer Science, make sure you love computers and love programming to death. I did Comp Sci for a year and a term and quit because I found it depressingly boring. Now I'm doing Multimedia Communication Systems, which is a nice hybrid between programming, advanced computer networking, and multimedia design.

If you get into programming of any sorts, make sure C# is in there. That's a big up and coming player in the industry.
