Because animated gif support is intrinsically built into the web-browser. Rich would have a hard time (if not impossible) stopping the use of animated GIFs. However, Flash objects are just that--- imbedded third party objects, with which Rich can easily disable.

That being said, I don't think Flash objects should be disabled because they basically run in a sandbox if I remember correctly. You can't harm a computer with a Flash object.

Well I look at it this way--- I'd rather be annoyed to hell by a Flash banner than an animated GIF. For one thing Flash banners are much smaller on bandwidth, and at least the animation is supposed to be smoother as a whole.

Flash animations can spawn popups and play sounds. Boy that would be slightly annoying.

SVG on the other hand would rock slightly.

well, couldn't we call one from php? Like put the php link in the image url, and have the php page call the flash? Not sure about it, just spawning ideas....
