That is the most amazing thing I've seen in a long time. I've heard of this phenomenon before, but never read into it much (pun not intended).

Wow, how long did that take to type out? :-P

Yup, saw this a while ago on the BBC - very cool. I have a friend who wrote a pc program that shuffled letters around in words for you, and it does work. Pretty neat.

I've seen something that's even more drastic than that.

It starts off normal writing then just gets more and more screwed up. Turns out we don't actually even read any of a lot of the words. You can literally just put random symbols in there like greek letters and numbers (?!).

A lot of it is from anticipating what they are going to say, which is I guess why no one read it as "that I cloud actually".

(Did anyone read that wrong?)

Rich posted this a couple of years ago. If I remember rightly, it turned into a very long thread of total garbage!

ive seen this years ago at school, turns out in america that after the people educated in the 70's (grades K-5) this only works. Before the 70's they didnt teach the kids to spell phonetically, just the words... my teacher had a hard time decyphering what it said.

At least thats what she told me.,

This sort of thing was mentioned (probably in passing), when I was at school - 20 odd years ago, so its not terribly new research. It just shows how superior we are, to say, the Lumbricus terrestris

I should point out, though, that Cattlerustler's spelling is awful... Kids, if you want to learn to spell, dont go near Cattlerustler...

I learned about this a few years ago in one of my classes. It's pretty cool the mind can do alot of unbelievable things. It's all because the human mind is just a pattern recognition machine. Everything we do the mind does through pattern recognition.

I give it four more posts before someone cracks open the ol' 1337 Translator.

What a great big bundle of what-in-the-name-of-god-were-you-thinking? that was.

Hmm, is this really true?

I think someone in the old RGT posted something that disproved this. Heres my rough memory of the quote, in first person.

Aougtlhh it is dseuoblts taht the hmaun mnid is eeelrtmxy poeufwrl, I hvae dbuots aoubt this sudty. Wlhie this mhgit aplpy to smoe wdros, i tnhik tihs can be doievrpsd by cneaitrg stceeenns cnnssiitog mtlsoy of lhtgeny, caeiolpmtcd wdros. It might also be psoilbse to mkae smoe wrdos ueaandlbre by sinetaprag the cooannntss form the vweols.

Reading that again, the post on RGT was much harder to read with only like 5 or less short words.

I think I remember that someone pointed out that if you add in certain patterns to the words it makes them harder to read? Let's test...

Tihs scnetnee has a slpmie prettan aeilppd to it to see if pnrettas mkae coisneherpmon any hedrar.

Tihs snetcene has a smplie petratn aplepid to it to see if prtetans mkae cisnheoerpomn any hdrear.

Is the top one easier, harder, or the same?

Maybe I'm remembering things I never read.

You can't create a test like that because after reading the top one, we already know what the bottom one is going to say.
