It has to be an illusion.
The engine is not designed for the enemies to do damage to each other.
It is impossible at the moment to do so, BUT there is a work around.
If they are simply aimed at each other and firing then a timer can determine who gets their destroy script called.
They would actually kill themselves with their own AIMAIN, but it would appear that they died in combat.

Another illusion is created that the player changes characters, but he just got relocated and the Hud changed.
