I am working on a 3d space game the early stages(writing on paper), I wanted to have a 3rd person look at the spaceship. What I am wondering is should I go with Backdrop and a Matrix, or a Matrix and a Sky Oject? Any help would be nice. Thank you

I would say - none of the above.

Starting from the outside-in - have a skybox or skysphere for the outermost parts of your world (a search on these terms will bring up lots of discussions on the subject). The rest of your world is best done using models (.x, dbo or Gile[s]) or perhaps advanced terrain for the landscape.

Searching for any of the above will get you heaps of information.
