ouch! , thats not a good start for Sony, esp when you consider all their problems with sales resistance over DRM and the rootkit debacle, worst case scenario is if they went bust shortly after releasing it and all the early adopters ended up with an expensive doorstop.

if it does come out on time then it might be better to hold back and see what happens before buying one, if they do release it too soon it may make the 360 and it`s problems look good compared to what could go wrong....

There is *NO* way that it will be $800 when it comes out, and I would bet anyone on this.

The 3DO came out at over $700, and that is the most major issue that plagued it into the fiery pits. The guys at Sony are smarter than this, and they will sell at a loss if they have to.

Who would call themselves Ars Technica???

I think that people will buy it for $800, but not many. Maybe enough for it to go ahead.

The Amiga came out at £2000

the company that published the report are industry experts, they expect Sony to take a pounding on the price and sell em at a big loss, it`s just looking more expensive than they expected, I guess the Blu-ray delays are the major problem.

personaly I think that since most game companys can`t even fill a DVD with media, they could have passed on that technology and saved some money, they are just planning on giving Blu-ray a user base prior to release of home Blu-ray players so that they can sell more disks and leverage the sales of the new disk technology by convincing the movie makers that it`s worthwhile to adopt it.

theres been a lot of sales resistance building, people are getting tired of perpetualy updating their gadgets, not many people use their console as their main video player anyway so I don`t see why they think it will help establish the technology.

The first playstations were $1000 or more when they came out so I wouldnt call it impossible and sony think they own the market their dumb enough to do it.

Umm, $1000, where? I got mine for 300$, or around that area (can't remember the price, its been 10 years but it sure wasn't $1000) on stateside release day. I still have the ol bugger now that I think about it, and it still works, even after Final Fantasy 7+8+9+Anthology(5+6), Chrono Cross, Vagrant Story, Xenogears, and Ehrgiez (Think 100+ hours on each of those games, plus not to count all the other games I had). Sure was built to last, heh.

Oh and as for the PS3 pricing... Sony's not stupid, 450$ at the max or its not gonna make Holiday 2006. Releasing it anytime before September would also be a stupid move, going on a head to head match with Microsoft's X360 is a retarded move.

@Eric T: I think he means they cost 1k each to make, not what the retail price was, they try to make the money on the game titles rather than the console so they sell em at a slight loss to make em cheap enough for most people to afford.

If Sony were smart, they would give them away for $99. I know if I could get one for that cheap, I would go out and spend about $4-500 on games.

If I had to shell out $500US for the system, I would most likely just get one game at most.

hey Me! and Jeku,

and others too

some of the reasons why the PS3 are being delay are due to these:

IBM, Toshiba, and Sony are still having both design and manufacturing problems with the cel processor.
There is also some problems with the manufacture of the disks used in the hard drive.

if and when the PS3 is released......I will be getting one for sure.
Yet, I will wait for the second or even third batch release.

In the meantime, and in-between time:

(1) I'm waiting for the release of the Cobra game programming language.

(2) Looking into both Pure Basic and also the Cold Steel engine.

(3) relearning Dark Basic and then onto DBPRO.

(4) finishing up my Anubis program and also my virtual tour of the Aztec city program...both in Blitz3d.

(5) reading and studying the book 'The Black Art of Video Game Console Design' by Andre Lamothe.

(6) most of all....check into this www.parallax.com/propeller
yes!...the Hydra propeller chip. And also, the programmable Hydra game console will be coming out this Summer too.

I'll be posting more about it soon.

cheers,

Cost and sale price are completely different things.

All of the console makers suffer a loss on hardware sales, but they soon make it up by making it impossible to write games for their consoles without them taking their cut of the profit ... except for microsoft of source - they still made a loss on the Xbox if my information is correct

Being late to the game isn't always a bad thing - anyone remember what happened to the Dreamcast when it was the first next-gen console out?

I'm 100% with Jeku on this... there's no way Sony is going to release the system for $800.

Another thing you guys have to remember... this is Sony we're talking about here, not Magnavox or Aiwa or those people who tried to make that "Phantom" system a while back. These people know what they're doing. The PS2 is and has always been, as I understand it, the number one console. And I'm pretty sure the PS3 is going to reclaim that throne. Have no fear, Playstation fans... our day is going to come, and soon. Let's ALL just pray that they release the PS3 WITHOUT those goofy looking controllers (I will stand by and argue to the death that the Analog2 controllers are the greatest in console history, hands-down outright bar-none).

The first Playstation was released, if I remember correctly, at $349.99. Most consoles are... it's an industry standard that predates the existence of some of the people who post on these forums (man, I'm old, someone kill me).

Sorry Ninendo for saying this, but the Revolution is the worst entry by Nintendo into the home gaming industry since their attempts with the Virtual Boy. Why are people going to pay for a system with practically no upgrades, that's basically just a PS2 in disguise? Maybe what I read in Game Informer was wrong, but the last thing I heard about Revolution is that it isn't something anyone should bank on. But fear not, I'm sure Nintendo will bounce back... they always do.

Right now, the war is between Sony and Microsoft. I know a lot of XBox people are going to hate me for this, but Sony is probably going to win. The specs for the PS3 simply blow the 360 away, and once the PS3 comes out, I'm pretty darn sure Microsoft's Halo plans are going to be foiled. But hey, I'm getting my information from old Game Informer mags from several months ago (maybe even a year ago), so I'm probably wrong

I hear that Sony just started making money on the PS2 a couple months ago. Don't know how true that is, but it sounds a bit right. If any of the Big Three (Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo) where to release a console at full price it would be insane.

Personally I like Jeku's plan, sell it for $99 and make money of the games.

To Matt Rock: Yea I agree, Nintendo will bounce back, but not in the console department. They're mainstay now is handheld. The PSP, while awesome in everyway, just doesn't live up to the notions of a handheld as far as games go. There are practically no games for it and if there are they're nothing compared to those on either the Nintendo DS or the original Gameboy's. Plus, they're aren't in any RPG's!

That price of $800 actually way low as stated on the site thats minus the cost of assembly plus add in R&D remember both cell processer and blu ray tech are both the brain childs of sony, also packaging and shipping cost so im sure if you factor those in the cost of producing one unit goes way beyond $800 per unit. So how much of a loss they are willing to take will really be the main factor also remember that the ps3 will ship without a hd so the consumer will have to shell out for either a memory card to hd at the time of purchase who is going to spend $800 on a system and turn around and spend $50 to $120 on a mem card or a hd, i would say not to many. My guess would be around $400 to $500 system and with hopes of people buying at least 3 to 5 games with a memory card or 2 to 3 games and a hd at launch since games and perihals are where the money is made anyways.

The Revolution isn't even out yet, and the specs aren't known, so your Game Informer mag is B.S.

Uh... only a little bit more powerful? The thing packs more heat than my desktop, or so it seems. Doesn't it have like a teraflop processor or something crazy? My Sony Vaio PC only has a 3GHz processor and around a gig of ram... from what I've read, the PS3 is incredible. I understand it as the PS3 is going to roll up the 360 into a fattie and smoke it (by fattie, I mean bubblegum, and by smoke it, I mean chew it, so relax mods )

According to that issue of Game Informer, somebody at Nintendo said the Revolution is going to be a lot like the PS2 and won't be nearly as marvelous as the Sony or Microsoft offerings... but yeah, it's a magazine.

I think the PSP just needs time to get off the ground. It has Liberty City Stories, and I've been itching to play that being a pretty hardcore GTA fanatic. The next time I have a few hundred bucks lying around, I was thinking of buying a PSP. And fear not, I'm sure they'll come out with an RPG someday

Yeah right!
