Both are well-established and entertaining games, but in my opinion it's HL2 by a long shot.

What is your opinion?

Half-Life 2.

But Halo 2 has the epic battles, e.g. where you are driving a tank and destroying dozens of enemies flying at you simultaneously.

Half-Life 2 has an interesting story, and all the levels are incredibly varied (i.e. desert, zombie town, prison, dusty roads, etc.)

HL2 is the best, but I think Halo 2 was funner. But Halo : CE funner than Halo 2. I just think it's too bad that HL2's gameplay gets slowed down by puzzles all the time. I like the puzzles, they're just too frequent.

The better question would be Halo or Half-life 2 :p

i've only played halo 2, but i believe that the halflife 2 story is a bit more engaging than halo's; but you have got to love the halo battles and the never ending worlds

wasn't the thread "Doom3 vs HL2" a while back? We see who knocked out who in the first bout, now they come with Halo2...

ding ding ding!

Honestly I haven't played Halo2 so I cant say which is better, not that there is a true "better or worse" for any of these games, everyone has their opinions and likes/dislikes. I like HL2, I dont LOVE it. I do prefer HL2 over doom3 anyday however. FEAR was amazing except it sucked visually in all respects, unless you were in a slomo a cut scene or a wicked gun battle - otherwise it was butt ugly. Then again this is all MHO.

so far, survey says: Half-Life 2 undesputed heavy-weight champ

So far survey says that 2 people are instantly disqualified for not having played the opponent.

I am not exactally qualified either, as I have only tried the HL demo, but there are aspects which I do not like. First one being the excessive use of traps and GravGun. HL 1 followed the standard hold as much as you can method, which is something I am opposed to, but it works. In the HL2 demo it was, hold what you can, but you better keep the GravGun or CrowBar near cause ammo is scarce. Even then... The game had a kind of bloated feel... everything was... big. And in my opinion... too big.

Problem with Halo 2 (besides obvious texture issues) is that the game it self feels soo much different then Halo 1. Not in textures and models, but the game... It is hard to explain, but if you play both of them, you may see what I mean. Another issue IS the story and Missions. Halo 1 had a lot more mini-objectives, change in scenery, tone... It was epic.
I also feel that vehicals such as the tank had become too common. In Halo 1, you had the tank for too short of time, but it was like a reward. Halo 2? It is just about as common as the warthog. And... it is pathetically weak. Not to mention the flood seem very good at getting into it. (I was really hoping for the introdution of a new flood, or a new speci).

So... both lose. and Wolf 3D wins.

Played both, I preferred HL2 but I doubt I ever got the real experience (was playing on a GeFore FX 5200 )

And now I've re-installed xp there's no way I'm installing HL2 on 56k again.
At least I got to experience cutting zombies in half with flying saw blades once in my life. Might buy it for xbox if I have the money and see it for sale at the same time.

But Halo 2 is top fun on co-op.

Sacrelige. PS3 = 99 Nights. 99 Nights = Omnishua X 99. Omnishua X 99 = YAY! I had a 360, but it freaking overheated in the middle of a match between me and my little brother on PDZ (which sucked)

They're both as boringly linear as each other with stories that do at times engross you and other times make you wonder why they even bothered.

Both with over-hyped and ultimately for me atleast disappointing.
Personally a game I would say is worth playing right now which is an FPS would have to be; well actually I can't think of one that is particularly amazing. Perfect Dark Zero is good if you're playing multiplayer, especially in co-op mode. In single player it is a little iffy on your own; and unfortunately doesn't have the same kick as the other Rare FPS offerings.

Quake 4 is just plain boring.. they gave away the best bits as the teaser unfortunately.

Call of Duty is the same-old same-old with better graphics.

For the moment my favourite FPS is Killzone, simply because while it's quite linear; there is a little more variety in what you do. Plus the multiplayer is great fun when you're against a mate on the snow map with domination.

By far the most played games at my place right now, are Kameo, NFS: Most Wanted, and Battlefront II

Sid Sinister, HL2 doesn't have to end there.
[1] Half-Life 2: Episode One is coming out soon.
[2] [href]GMod[/href] is just freaking entertaining.
[3] Any of the other mods, like Dystopia or CS:S

And in my opinion, the ending was terrififc, it explained a lot. Want a game that's just "me got gun, me kill kill kill"? Try Serious Sam II. I love great plots in games. Games are like interactive telivision to me.

I like Raven's view on the campaign of Half Life 2 and Halo 2.

Half Life/2 has an interesting way of telling a story, but the trade up is is that you never get emotionally worked up in it. Halo 2 got you excited, but then there was a huge letdown long before the cliffhanger as the intensity of the plot flatlined, and then once it got exciting again they dropped the cliffhanger on you.

I'll give Halo 2 props for trying to bring FPSs to a mass audience, but the little tweaks they put into it made it less fun for old Halo fans. There's a noticable difference in multiplayer with auto aim and weapon balance, there's just less variety in Halo 2 and the hit detection seems a little screwy. On the other hand, Half Life 2 would sometimes get frustrating with challenging action sequences that weren't any major part of the game (where in HL1 the challenging action sequences were big boss sequences and similar things), so you felt stuck and a little irked that you couldn't always use your brain to get yourself out of a sticky situation.

Gameplay and plot wise they both are equal in my mind, so I'll cast my vote towards the better music, Halo 2.

I prefered HL2, it had an interesting environment, suitibly sinister enemies, and it did follow on from the original reasonably well, except the 'wow, it's Gordon' from more people than were ever in the first game.

Halo 2, well I found it all a bit glitchy, and apart from the nice physics engine I much prefered Halo 1. Halo 1 has that edge, like you could tell the developers were smirking most of the time when making it - love it or hate it, nobody can deny that it changed console FPS games permanently for the better.

Personally, I've been playing Black, and that's a damn good shooter, predictable, it has all the usual level design features, and it could be considered a fairly cheeky HL2 clone. But damn it just drags you in, everything just feels right, the graphics are outstanding, and more importantly it's extremely challenging. No vehicles, no gimmicks, no 'just because' gravity gun, no OTT physics. It's like HL2 except you don't get the impression that you could beat up the player character and take all his cool guns from him.

FarCry Instincts is worth a pop too, the games quite massive, and far more playable on XBox than it ever was on PC - it's just an incredibly well balanced game, along with the multiplayer stuff and level editor, it's raised above the other cloned FPS games. It's the only splitscreen deathmatch game I've played in a long time.

Interesting. I just read that Halo 2 will only work on Vista when it comes out. Slightly annoying. I mean I have several machines around that should be capable of playing the game, but all are on XP Pro. Probably will only upgrade one of them to Vista (at least in the beginning), so stuffed if want to play Halo 2 on other machines. Sigh.

Nevermind, can always play the version I've owned on X-Box for bloody ages Saying that, would like a multi-player version in decent resolutions. Drat.

Cheers

the only thing that annoyed me with HL2 is that there`s Earth gutted and the population reduced to almost nothing apparently partialy as a consequence of the Black Mesa incident, and everyone goes around saying "hey! your Gordon Freeman arn`t you...gosh! can I have your autograph? touch you? kiss your feet?"

WHY?, even the soldiers in the original HL thought Freeman was a saboture, the scientists thought the anomalous materials lab had messed up, the surviving security guards wanted to "get their hands on the person who caused this mess" etc, so the survivors of the human race should have heard it was all Gordons fault from the people who survived Black Mesa (hey! he messed up the sample insertion), they should be wanting to rip his sodding head off, he at least partialy destroyed the Earth all on his own, (at least thats the official viewpoint)

so why does every one run around like he`s their long lost boyfriend come to save em?, last time he was let loose he screwed up the planet, was partialy to blame for an alien invasion, not to mention headcrabs, sticky tongues and bullsquids being everywhere, Black Mesa being destroyed (as far as anyone knows), and from what the G-man says at the start, he was partialy to blame for the Combine taking an interest in Earth, I mean, Gee! thanks Gordon!, your a pal!

If I was a survivor and realised who he was I would have redesigned his head with a pipe or phoned the nearest CP unit and told em where he was, pushed him into a pit of headcrabs or ANYTHING before he destroyed the rest of the planet, I mean, look at the ending of HL2, NOW it looks like he just went and Nuked City 17 and its survivors with the Citadels dark fusion reactor just to stop one old loone "escaping", not to mention killing Elie Vance, his daughter and the rest of the resistance, he shouldn`t be let out without a keeper .

other than that, HL2 was ok, but the makers of steam will hopefully die in extreme pain over a long period of time

I have played Halo, but it suffered from sameyness and repeated maps, from reading descriptions of Halo2 (where you seem to keep being a Covenant or Masterchief alternatly) just the concept sucks! totaly!, I would never want to play as Covenant, it screws the continuity, like you where suddenly playing as Cortana or something, WHY!??, WHY would you want to play any sort of Covenant?, thats just a simple hack to make the game look different and add some extra weapons at no extra cost imo, lame tatic, by all accounts the GFX where no better in Halo2 so I plump for HL2, despite that never to be sufficiently dammed steam system.

I've said this a million times in the forums, and I'll say it again, and I'll keep saying it until the people who agree with me decide to band together, take up arms, and commit a hostile and bloody takeover of the game industry to re-iterate this notion and write it in stone, with I's and T's dotted and crossed respectively in the blood of fallen game designers.

Killing aliens, zombies, and nazis is getting extremely old

Seriously people, there's other foes to tango with. Both of these games are bad, in my opinion, because they refuse to attempt to break the mold in any way. The game industry is slowly but surely going the route of the fledgling motion picture industry... it's rare that a quality movie comes out from a major film studio, and the same can be said (unfortunately) of the games industry.

That said, Battlefield 1942 still owns. Yeah, you kill Nazis, but who asked you!

ah! so what do we kill?, killing people isn`t PC, can`t do that, that leaves games where you go around being nice to people , er, games where you spray insects with flyspray or games where you hunt animals (also not very PC), or maybe a fishing simulator?, lets face it, if you want opponents but don`t want to kill people you have three options, Aliens,Nazi`s or Zombies (and the Nazi`s have to be just evil cannonfodder...no humanity allowed), anything from the era of swords or clubs don`t work, weapons like that just suck basicly, so Conan the FPS is out, unless you are thinking about something like Thief, but thats not realy the sort of thing I go for, I`m more your "saving the world/universe head on" type of player, I prefer Headshots to Garrotings.

But it gets so frickin' old! Can't we come up with more original opponents? And the gameplay is almost always the same in all these games, too.

Jeku,

It's a long story, involving international terrorists, elaborate locations and a sassy female super-agent.

If it counts for much, I'm completely stuck on level 5.

Well I just got Black yesterday--- surprised it was still in The style is pretty cool, although for some reason I couldn't skip the cinematics.

I love the writing on the back of the case:

1) Guns are the stars. 2) Every bullet is your baby. 3) Bigger guns, louder explosions. 4) Leave a trail of destruction. 5) Get creative with your kills.

Pah, I thought I was the only one who had underworld connections...

I spend more on games a month than I do on rent! - if those GS goths don't treat me right I'll just have to go to the GAME goths, although at GAME they have some sort of goth rotation system that I've yet to understand.

Got Stubbs the Zombie early too, damn I never thought I'd get bored of a co-op zombie game so quickly.

R6:Lockdown is actually a very playable game, recently I've got sick of R6 games because they're too difficult, this one has more graphical glitz and less AI, it's easier, but really it's not upto the standards of Black and Farcry:Instincts. Considering that you'll probably be able to pick it up for peanuts second hand, I'd suggest waiting on a bargain. It is 2-player co-op on the missions (once you unlock them), so if you like multiplayer it's worth getting.

Pu.. He... Wa... Fe... Stubbs is good for it's content matter, I admit the gameplay sucks, but you have to appriciate the fact that you'll charge up poisonus spleens by eating brains.

Sledge Hammer's pick-up lines: Your ammo dump or mine? /I feel connected to you... by handcuffs. /Where have you been all my life? Incarcerated? /How about some fine wine and pork chops?
