I think the general idea is a single side has 1000+ players, each of those players is either pressing up or down, whichever number is greater determines the direction the paddle moves.

There was an article on digg a few days ago about using the same idea in a flight sim, and everyone did a barrle roll as if it was a natural instinct. I'll go link hunting.
