Thought you techies out there would be interested in this... It's been on site news for awhile now but a video got leaked of a project that Microsoft is working on called Origami.

You can visit their current -Viral marketing- website here http://www.origamiproject.com

Also make sure you check out the leaked video here... http://creativecoremedia.com/mso.swf

Microsoft reps have already come out to say that the video is indeed accurate, however over a year old.. New information for the Origami is coming out tomorrow as you can see by the website(how much information nobody knows).. but it shall be interesting.. Have fun!

Looks like a rival for the psp, the i-pod, pdas, and even the ds with its touch screen.

The only problem I can see with it at the moment is that it's huge. It will have a massive sreen, sure, but it looks like it's aproaching the size of a small laptop. I'm guessing that gaming will be a secondary feature for it.

I'm still trying to figure out what the point of the product is. There's nothing there that something else doesn't do already :-P

At least if you get caught outside in the wilderness you can use it as a flippin tent! Very convenient how all the actors had bodybag sized carrying equipment so they could ship it round with them.

This looks very unimpressive in my view. Halo on a portable is quite exciting, yes... but Pocket PCs were capable of good 3D years ago (Anthelon II anyone) and it is hard to tell if they have disabled the bump mapping or not. (which they probably have)

It does seem to be just a glorified Tablet PC - which, if its reasonably priced (which Table PC's aren't), then it could do well.

Hmm, I quite like it. Microsoft seem to be good at making all in one solutions to things, wich I like. Microsoft Visual Studio seem's to have everything you could want in one place, I'm not sure how to explain it, but they're very good at making things fit together nicely. This here is a perfect example, as it shows how it intergrates well with your desktop, how it intergrates with your photography work, and your travelling. I used to think that making stuff fit together was something only Apple does... It's only recently I've seen Microsoft use similar tactics...

Now "that" would be cool! Get out a piece of folded paper from your back pocket, open it up and hey presto... you got a touch screen computer!

[edit]

I hope they worked seriously hard on the design since then, i laughed out so loud when that guy selected a music track and proceeded to place that huge brick of a device in his back pocket!

If this thing was a reasonable size (I'd say no bigger than 2.5 times the PSP) and a reason able price (no more than £250) then I can see it doing well. I'd get one myself! I have a laptop but it's just too heavey to drag to school and for pure note taking typing is a lot slower than using a pen.

Still, the thing will probally have Vista installed on it - perhaps too much of a system hog for a tablet pc?

Eh?

Surely it would cost way more than that.

I seriously doubt this is MSofts (see, not everyone writes M$) attempt at a psp beater, and the quicker all the fanboys out there realise that every new handheld isn’t trying to compete with the psp the better. (That’s my opinion and if you want to argue feel free to e-mail me but be a good netizen and don’t turn this thread toasty).

Like most things, I can see it being useful if you need it, but then there are some people who'll buy it for no real reason. It's the same with pda's.

I really wish they'd learn that trying to build up hype doesn't always work though. The website is a load of cheese. All it does is get people predicting things that never happen and then being massively disappointed. The same thing happened this very week, Apple invited a few journos to a product unveiling and everyone got really excited about bigger video ipods and media minis. Which all led to disappointment when Steve Jobs didn’t deliver the goods..

I'm going to sit on the fence for now, but can't see myself buying one. There's so much new technology appearing at the moment I'd rather save my beans.

Despite the look, i'll almost bet money it's going to be the first one with Windows Vista on it.

It looks SO ugly!

Quote: "So big and bulky will never beat the only true handheld psp Why are m$ consoles so big "

First, why are you saying that the PSP is the "true" handheld? You have heard of that company called "Nintendo", haven't you?

And Microsoft's consoles aren't that big. Well, they are but... The 360 has a reasonable size. But making the console bigger makes them more suitable as weapons against Sony-fans...

PS! I'm not trying to start a "system war". Not at all...

Well, according to ZDNet.com it'll run XP, and they're aiming for the device to cost around $500, which at current exchange rates is: £285.2.11 (rounded to 2dp). Though, as we get mugged off in the UK they'll problaly charge us £350.
