For the few of you who care, I might be leaving the forums for an undisclosed period of time. We might be getting evicted - It's more like "probably" than "might be."

When my girlfriend moved to New York from Idaho in September/ October, we thought she'd get a job doing massage, and that along with what I do would be able to pay the rent and whatnot, but she couldn't get a massage job and ended up working at a phone company for next to nothing. I had to quit what I was doing and find a new, higher-paying job, but it was too little too late, and now we have to show up in court on the 9th of this month unless we come up with $1300 before then... which won't happen because I don't know anyone with that kind of money. I asked my parents if they could help but with my sister's recent house fire in November and newborn kid who arrived a few days before that, most of their surplus money goes to them. Now we're trying to find a bank loan but no one will give one to us because our credit has been thoroughly wrecked. It's a sucky position to be in and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Anyway, if we get evicted I'll be in the process of attempting to find an apartment, and then we'll need to get the cable turned on and all of that before I can come back to the forums, so it could be a while (maybe even a month or two) before you guys see me again.

I don't usually blab about my personal crap in here... I guess I just needed to vent. Sorry if you sat through this expecting something interesting.

Wow. That really sucks. Honestly, if my parents werent so gay, i would send you over some money. I say everyone on here donates you 5 bucks. That would help.

Good luck. I feel bad.

Do you have a PayPal account?

I have a paypal account but I don't feel right taking money from anyone on these forums... I'd have to pay back $5 to everyone on here and it wouldn't be right to ask you guys to pay for my stupidity. I was in such a good mood today, too, watching old boxing matches and excited that I just got a new job... until that city clerk employee showed up with his "notice of petition." This sucks... I'm totally screwed

Have anything to sell, that's the first thing i would be thinking about doing maybe you wouldn't come up with 1300 but if you could give at least half of that i think most landlords would be willing to give you guys at least some more time to come up with the rest of the rent money unless you are on extremely bad terms with them.

Well, do you have any old computers, televisions, ect.

You are in NYC. Sell stuff. I know I can find around $1,300 worth of stuff I could sell if i really had to.

Honestly, everyone that can should help you out with a little payment. 5 bucks here and there will help if everyone in the forums could.

Join the military. Did you know if you can't pay the rent or the car, the military will do it for you? I never had to do that, but it used to be my wife's job to hand out the money.

Plus, it's steady income with good benefits. I'm glad I'm out, but I'm sure glad I was in.

The only thing I have that's really worth much is my computer, which I need for my new job. Then there's the car but that isn't even paid for fully yet (banks won't allow us to use it as collateral, which just adds to the headache). All in all I think I've only got a few hundred dollars worth of stuff that's worth selling. Unfortunately, they want the full $1300 and won't settle, we already asked them a few weeks ago when it was closer to $2000. We paid them a ton of money since then and thought this was all behind us and they were going to wait to see if we kept paying them, but then that guy showed up tonight.

If everyone gave me $5 it would take about 260 people to "donate." I thank you for your efforts but I don't think it would be right of me to accept something that. If someone wanted to give me some sort of loan that I would pay back, that's different (since I can't find a bank to give me a loan). If anyone has a ton of money lying around and they feel like helping me out they can e-mail me or use my website's donation thing (via paypal)... but I can't accept money without paying people back, it's not right. But thanks for the effort Transworld.

Has anyone been in a situation like this? If so, how did you get out of it? Or were you completely screwed and ended up without a home? UGH... if this isn't the worst thing that I've gone through I don't want to try and remember what was. I think my only real hope is that the judge will be willing to agree to some kind of deal or something.

Edit: @ Curtiss, I can't join the military for health reasons, I tried when I was 18 so they'd pay for my college but they wouldn't let me join. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I suffered spinal injuries in high school after a car accident. It doesn't bother me as much as it used to and I'm not paralyzed or anything, but they won't let me join because of it. If I run about half of a mile it gets so friggin' painful I can't think straight. But I would have dealt with it if they would have paid for my college. Stupid doctors don't know anything.

Oh yeah you know be like Dick and Jane and go and rob stuff to get back into a good financial situation. >_<

But serioulsy Matt I'd say try to apply your skills in some way to get money, for example tournaments or compos of some sort that don't span months upon months.

For instance (I didn't read it so you may have to be a registered member of the MLG but if not this might be a good way to get some cash.)

http://www.mlgpro.com/events.php?#25

But thats just a suggestion.

WEll, you can sell your drumkit to a music store. Your in NYC rite?
crap, i cant remember the name of the really good music store..... well you can sell it off and make a decent 200-300 bucks or more if its good. and a snowboard can make you 100-200. so thats 500 at max you can make pretty easily.

What about a TV? or DVD/VCR player or ps1/2 or xbox?

@ Cian: It looks interesting but I think it would take me a while to build up in something like that. I wish I'd gone to college for something useful but gaming is pretty much all I'm good at

@ Trans: I'm north of NYC in the Southern Tier but yeah, I think selling the kit and snowboard might be my only options. I paid about $2200 for the kit so it might get $500 - $1000 (if I'm lucky), and I think you're right about the snowboard. I have a PS2 but it's ancient (I got it when it came out and still have the same one).

@ Megaton: I'm usually really good with money and whatnot. I'm 26 and never had any debt or anything... this is a first for me and it suuuuucks. I've learned my lesson, even if things work out somehow in the end (like a millionaire runs me over and gives me a briefcase full of money to settle out of court... I think that's my last hope right now ) You should sue that ski lodge and loan me $1300 of your suit's winnings!

@ Data (and everyone else): Thanks for all the support guys. I guess I'll keep you posted on what happens, and if it works out, you'll hear from me on March 10th, and if I dissappear, you'll know why.

Sorry to hear, Matt. Two words: credit cards.

They may be the spawn of the devil, but they *really* do help when you're in a pinch. Something similar to your situation came up and my wife and I were forced to either live off the credit card for 6 months, or be bums. Even though we're in credit card debt now, at least we recovered and now I have a dream job and my wife is still going through school.

They'll give *anyone* a mastercard nowadays--- when they first phoned me asking if I wanted one, I was only 18 and I said right off the bat: "Listen dude, I'm 18 and unemployed." The guy said "It doesn't matter."

I'm not condoning young people to get one and rack it up, but if you ever have an emergency (i.e. engine failure on the highway and you need a tow truck), sometimes the only way to get out of the mess is with a credit card.

Good luck

Me!

sell eveything
find hostel
or cheap appartment
move somewhere cheaper like India
join a cult
move back to parents
buy a tent
get rid of car (they eat money)
bicycle
walk
bus
train
get a business startup and get premises with accomodation
sell an organ (kidney/bone marrow NOT heart or brain unless planning to be in government)
sell girlfriend (I understand white slave trade is still going good)
pimp girlfriend
get second job (worked for Onasis)
pick up wealthy girl and move in with same
sue landlords for emotional distress
sell off what you have and buy hiking gear, move about country until you find another job with affordable accomodation
register with homeless charitys
put "room wanted" sign in local store

You might try begging at the local churches, some of them have "outreach funds" for helping people with rent and utilities, I've known a few people who have survived a pinch by getting help from churches, even though they've never been to those churches. I bet if you hit 20 of them you would have your rent taken care of. Go as a couple and your chances will be better.

Sorry to hear of your position, good luck.

That's the best idea I've heard yet. How long does it take to clear them? I'll dig around and see what I can get!

Quote: "sell girlfriend (I understand white slave trade is still going good)"

She's Phillipino though

Quote: "You might try begging at the local churches, some of them have "outreach funds""

I'd feel wrong taking money from a church... I'm agnostic. But hey, it's worth a try. I called Catholic Charities but they responded with the catholic version of "go **** yourself". I'll have to try other churches... everyone in New York State is either Jewish, Roman Catholic, or Presbyterian (sp?) so my options are somewhat limited

The good news is, I scrounged $300 this morning by selling my last computer to a friend who wanted the parts and now I only owe $1,000. Anyone want to buy my drumkit for $500? Lots of Ludwig parts, Mapex stands, Sabian splash, crash, and hats and a Paiste 90" ride? Anyone know a loan service that will take someone with bad credit/ no credit? UGH, this is nerveracking. If they'd give us another month I could come up with the money, I'm sure of it, but a few days? UGH! I should go try to get some sleep or something. Thanks for all of the support everyone!

Edit: My brother had an interesting idea... find ten people to lend us $100 each, and we pay back $125 to each of them. I might try that with my family and friends tonight, see if anyone is willing to do something like that.

Too bad we can't sell blood here. We get little packages of cookies and a cup of coffee or orange juice.

Matt - Credit card purchases are instant, and they take about a business day to finalize.

Go to a cash machine or your bank and take out the cash from the credit card.

A paiste 90" ride huh... i think that alone would be worth at least your $1300...

I had a friend in a similar situation as well, and, like Jeku, they used credit cards to buy them some time. As of right now, they're doing a lot better, but still have the debt to pay off. Seems better than begging on the streets, however.

Best of luck to you

I wish... I only paid about $250 for that cymbal, to replace a Sabian AAX Ride that I broke during a show. And it's a 20", not a 90"... that was a typo. I don't think they make 90" cymbals (well, gongs and whatnot and those are worth thousands I think). It's a Paiste 3000 20" ride cymbal.

I just applied for a Mastercard online but it said it would take them up to 30 days to get back to me about it I only have about seven days until the court date, so I need to come up with money super fast. A thousand dollars in seven days... how am I going to pull this one off

If I can't solve this problem and come up with $1,000 by the March 7th I might have to try Trans' idea and beg 260 people for $5 each, or try my brother's idea and beg for $100 each. I wish I could sell a service or something. I have a bunch of game concepts that I was planning on making in the future... a cowboy/ western game, a few space adventures, a boxing title, a few "tycoon" concepts, some extreme sports games, a couple of simulators... anyone wanna buy one of those concepts for $1000? And I'll throw in all of the design data I've created for them? Hey, it's worth a try to ask, even when I know no one will take up the offer

Ideas are a dime a dozen, unfortunately

Too bad about the credit card--- I thought most people our age already had one or two of them.

As a worse case scenario you can go to one of those debt consolidation companies (not sure of business names in the states, but we have plenty of them here). They will pay off your debts but charge a hefty interest fee. For only $1000 you won't be screwed for life, so I would look into that if I were you. Just remember to pay it off quickly as the compound interest can hurt

I'll check out the debt consolodation, thanks.

I've always avoided credit cards and whatnot. In fact, I didn't have a bank card (the account but not the card) until I started buying stuff from TGC, believe it or not. I avoided internet purchases like the plague because I knew that if I had a card I'd rake up a zillion dollars in debt before too long. But it was worth it to get the debit card and spend all of that money on game creation stuff. I wonder if it's too late to return all the software and get my $500+ back... well, it's been a year so my guess is yeah, hehe.

** UPDATE **
[for those of you who are curious]

Thanks to my girlfriend's ingenius negotiating skills, the landlords said they're willing to work out a payment plan with us, one that we can afford, but only if we can come up with $762 by tomorrow. I might need to overdraw my bank card... and pray I don't go to jail over it. Hopefully all will be well though. Anyway, for those of you that were worried, I think the situation might be okay. Now I just need to worry about paying off my card debt!

Matt, you think you're in trouble! Check this out: Lost my well paid job last July (The company sucked and got rid of a load of people, but it did pay well). Got myself a crappy 'fill-in' job in mean time. Had our first baby in October (they are NOT CHEAP!). Lost the crappy 'fill-in' job last month (it was a temp contract). Now I'm behind on bills/council tax/mortgage/loan payments. I'm also looking for a way to sort this mess out! Trying the 'secured loan' route at the moment (I have about £50,000 equity on my house, but my credit rating also sucks so I'm not sure if I will get the money I'm after).

Also trying to investigate potential employment opportunities. I've come up with a few good ideas, but they all take time to get going. (I might as well mention it: if anyone is interested in applying for secured loan (uk only) please check out my website www.homeloanoptions.co.uk - ta!). If I had the money to advertise, I might actually start making some money out of it!

Times is hard... times is hard...

Good luck Matt. I know how you feel!

It's amazing how much time some of you guys with "financial problems" spend on the forums!

lol Megaton I can't afford to do much else! But at least I won't be evicted tomorrow, which i a touch of good news.

CJB, I wish you had that service here. I can't find a company to approve me of even a tiny $1,000 loan. We're eating with my parents every night I hope this new game I'm making turns some sort of profit... I'm selling each full version for $5, so if I can get around 150 people to buy it in its first month out, I won't get in too much trouble for overdrawing my bank account by $760... I can hope and pray

Matt Rock, right now I'd consider the whole video game thing kind of like starting the band. I'd put that junk on hold for a month or two. The bottom line is you need more income, and releasing a video game is unlikely to help in the short run.

I'd get a second job. Temporarily, to make ends meet. That is, until my girl could start pulling her weight. If I were working two jobs alone at the end of the two month period, I'd move on. That may sound cold, but it seems that the two of you are living above your means. I don't know that it's specifically her fault, but if it is, things need to change.

A word of warning - if she knows those are the terms, she could wind up 'accidentally' pregnant. Why do you think poor people keep having kids? It's not like guys actually want kids or anything. Nothing against her, but it tends to happen.

You can live on love, but love can't pay the bills. A second job can. You can still program, just sleep less if it's important to you. You've bought yourself some time, but you still need extra money.

Good luck.

I will have to agree, it pains me to say that you shouldn't depend on your videogame to sell.
