I did not get to compete . Coach quit at last second(at beggining of making the robot) and we didnt get to start. I still went to the first regional competition.
Has anyone even heard of this, or has seen/compete in this?

Heh, I did soemthing like that at my High School for Science Olypiad. We had to build a robot that would go around and put stuff into a box and pop balloons in a certain amout in time. I build mine out of legos, and it came in 11th place. Good times.

I've seen several competitions like this and none of them are robots to me. I believe a robot should run by itself without humans telling it what to do at every step.

Agree...

Robot building is essentially easy, the hard part is space.

If you had 10x more space then provided robot building would be consitered easy. Given you didn't build the circut board, then you have to actually do some work. And then, you do have to program it, so there is some more stuff. In the end run, the problems are essentally limited. Either your program sucks, or you have a bad connection.
