Graphically, the game is amazing. By far one of the best looking FPS games, and therefore potentially one of the best looking games I've ever played. The first thing that strikes you is the quality of the gun models, the architecture and the explosions. Boy, Criterion have done a superlative job with the explosions....

It's really making me want to make an FPS ... again.

It is quality. I'm still stuck on that harbour level though, I think that's near the end.

I agree, the gun models are superb - A shame that you can only take 2 at once, 3 is really the ideal number of guns (close range, mid range, long range) if it needs to be limited. It's kinda hard to put a finger on it, but there's something about Black, it seems to click perfectly together like so many ideal FPS features. The destructable terrain is cool too, not very dynamic but as an effect it's very cool.

I forgot to mention the sound quality; I was taking shelter in some crappy old hut, pinned down by like, 6 guys. All I can hear is shattering glass and splintering wood as the bullets fly past... fantastic stuff.

Several things bother me, like the "damage" animations for the enemy - they look very wooden/repetetive. Also, the innaccuracy of the AK47 is frustrating, although I'm thinking that's not a game-wide thing, just the gun.

I was playing Vietcong today with my housemate. The AK47 in that game is deadly accurate and vicious, and therefore my fave weapon. Having said that, one of my army mates who came back from Iraq said real AKs are about as accurate a blind grandma following a quantum mechanics knitting pattern (obviously, not his exact words). As frustrating as it is, sounds like they've made that bit realistic at least.

i played black and i was first struck by th 10min startup and the antiskippable cutscenes! then i started in a room and i found a shotgun. but it was impossible to get out of that room. so after 20mins i shot a round of shells on the door and it broke. i was free!!

later on i died and handed the controller back to my dad.
he's almost finished it allready and we've had it for 4 days :/

In Black I like the Mac-10 Uzi type weapon, it has practically no recoil, and headshots is the way to go with Black, so it makes it a really useful main weapon. Sniper rifles are kinda few and far between, kinda low ammo too - personally I like to snipe in these games, and the rifle is cool, but there's not enough of it.

The thing that annoys me though is how tricky it is to get those RPG dudes, if your not sharp you've got no chance .

It isn't the harbour I'm stuck on, I was stuck there for ages but it's actually quite a nasty level where you only get a checkpoint half way through (then tons of them after the halfway point!) - I'm thinking that's quite far on as the 'mark' is aparantly running around somewhere on that level.

It's out on PS2 as well, must be said that it does look fairly good, a bit like Killzone but with a little more 'trying to be like xbox' look to it (big but undetailed particle effects, blocky transparency instead of smooth alpha etc etc).

My only severe gripe with Black is the lack of checkpoints. You can die and go back like 15 minutes of gameplay.

And I died on the second mission right before killing the *very* last guy --- and the entire level was quite long. I was so frustrated I exited the game, but when I started it up again I was put back at the VERY beginning of the second level! Not even at my last checkpoint.

You'd think after alllll these years FPS' have been around that they would know gamers like multiple checkpoints (ala Halo)--- Black is fairly short so it's like Criterion wanted to add fake duration to the game.

Other than that, it's great

@Joel: no PC version yet, I guess their will be once it`s propped up the sales of the Xbox for long enough (like Halo), most PC`s should be able to run it easily enough.

@Jeku: awe, come on...I have been wanting to post one of those for ages...it just got the better of me...(so ok! I`m weak)

I bought Black the other day and was playing it last night, and just now infact. I'm about 10% through the game (PS2 version). I thought the first level was really cluttered and quite badly designed, some things just didn't 'make sense'. For example laptops = intel, how the hell do you know that? its not in the manual and the game doesn't tell you. I shot two without realising it was helping complete the objectives

The particle effects are quite lovely, especially the mini mushroom cloud on the 2nd mission when you take the farm! I did prefer the foliage levels so far though. The variety of people to kill is poor so far, but I'm not much into it I guess (3 hours play). The sniper rifle is dog slow to move around but packs a wallop when you hit someone with it!

The AK47 is my favourite gun, single shot mode for RPGers and full for the rest. I liked the shotgun too, but crap for the levels I've been doing. I did like the way you can shoot most stuff, but it has precious little effect on the very linear paths you can take.

Oh personally I hated the movie scenes before each level, boring and the 'style' of the filming didn't engage me at all. Even so I will finish it before flogging on ebay
