Ok heres the story. I bought a new x850xt 256MB AGP from a local computer store. Major upgrade for me from a 9600SE. I fully uninstalled all of the drivers and Catalyst Control Center from ATi using their special uninstall software.

I took out he 9600SE and put in the x850xt. No issues yet. I installed the x850xt drivers and Catalyst Control Center. Now the computer crashes at the WIndows Login screen and many other windows GUI things. It doesnt crash in games thought (ty god).

I intalled 3rd party software and uninstalled CCC. Im using ATI Tool and dont crash as much using no windows gui effects and windows 98 skin.

I was wondering if anyone else ever had an issue like this and can figure out how to fix it.

SPECS:
Abit NF-7 nForce 2 AGP Motherboard version 2.0
AMD Athlon XP 3000+ @ 2.3Ghz (gfx still crashes when @ stock clocks)
512MB Corsair ValueRAM
430 watts power supply
SoundBlaster Live! 24-bit

Thanks.

I actually had a Netgear Wireless card on one of my computers, and everytime the utility that came with it started up, the computer would crash. I just simply deleted the utility and have had no problems since. Not sure if it's connected with your problem, but it seems the same to me.

make sure Windows didn't install their own drivers, because that could cause problems

I stopped using ATI cards long ago because of odd stuff like that. Geforce all the way.

In any case you may want to completly uninstall everything video card related and start out with just installing the updated drivers.

hmm dang id have to agree with joel, my ATI card did that and i actually remember my onboard graphics stopped working so i had to re install windows XP without a moniter, and do the drivers without a moniter. I did it a couple times before so i memorized how to do it. XD geek to t3h mizzax.

check your program list by date, see if any drivers installed recently

are you using the drivers from disk or the latest Catalyst?
Either way ATi drivers generally suck for everything except game speed, which tends to get better each new driver. Even then you have a habit of seeing strange things in non-mainstream games.

Try making sure everything is up to date, including DirectX.

dam, i knew it felt funny.

@raven-
yea i have everything all up to date. i found out that overclocking the GFX card from 520mhz core to 567mhz makes me not crash as much (strange because OC'ing makes the card less stable lol).

but i still crash sometimes and its pissing me off lol.
