Newcomers DBPro Corner / explaining bsp

Altjough not new to programming I am new to dbpro.I see that there are some bsp commands but no explanation of bsp. What do I need to implement it in my progras? I know it is to do with portal visibility.

binary space partitioning.

i think its a quake/doom 3d mesh format. ive heard alot of people around here say that it kills framerate and you shouldnt use it.
i havent been able to test that theory because i cant find a modeler that exports to bsp.
