To all Hollywood movie production executives everywhere, here's a one word summary of whether or not you should re-make classic films:

DON'T

How did any sensible, sane, apparently intelligent human being believe that Steve Martin could possibly fill the shoes of the late, great, Peter Sellers? Its not so much a film, but a celluloid train wreck.

Depressing. Very depressing.

Oh I haven't gone and actually watched it. I've suffered the trailer and an in-depth interview / promo TV slot with Steve Martin and Kevin Kline. That was bad enough.

Ouch, I know what you mean. It would be like remaking "The Party" starring Martin Short--- nonsense. Martin Short (and Steve Martin) is funny in his own movies, but why remake a movie that was already a classic? You're setting yourself up for failure.

I have literally seen 3 seconds of a trailer. I agree, there is only one Clouseau. But Steve Martin seemed to have captured him in the 3 seconds I saw.

Yes, I know...3 seconds. But it showed 2 or 3 of his traits in an instant.

There are a few different trailers, and 1 of the three that I saw was quite good. The other two looked bad.

I agree totally. I boycotted this movie in my mind the minute I saw the trailer. I just thought it was wrong.

I also think the style of the pink panther lends itself to the whole style of films from the original's era. I don't think it can be a credible remake really.

I know it's worlds away, but it's kinda like 12 Angry men. That has to be left in the 50s/60s. It works as a film of that era. I couldnt see that brought into the 21st century without it being destroyed.

King Kong was a good remake of a classic. A little bloated, but I'm ok with that. I agree, though, in general. People shouldn't remake classics. There is something very wrong with that (another recent example is the Yours Mine and Ours remake, which doesn't hold a candle to the original with Lucille Ball and Hanry Fonda). The only remakes I have only seen that really work are ones that are based off of books that happened to already have movies made of them (e.g. The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia)

unfortunatley I am skint (out of work), so I begged and pleaded my family for a copy of Revenge of the Sith as a Christmas present to finish my collection, I wish now I had asked for socks, I thought at the time I saw eps 1&2 that he was taking too long to show Anakins weakness/dark side, RoTS was just a messed up, garbled lightshow, he obviously lost the plot in trying to stitch the original and the new series together.

maybe like ancient Rome they should have had someone following Lucas about saying "remember thou art only a man" , it seems to come to them all, a few flashes of brilliance and then they end up living off their initial reputation for the rest of their careers (Stanley Kubric, Orson Wells, Stephen Spielberg etc) only a select few seem to escape the fate (like Alfred Hitchcock), personaly I would petition Mr Lucas to make a "PROPER" Episode III to replace the mess he did make and tidy up the whole thing, you could make alowances for eps 1&2 since he was trying (imo) to show the disparity between what the universe had been and what it had come too by episode 4, I aint letting hime off lightly just because he`s George Lucas, even DaVinci would be critisised for painting a beard on the Mona Lisa (the real one, not the wrongly identified one in the Louvre).

In what way ? Poor acting ? Lousy script ? Absence of the original's iconic music ? Because I'm not in it ?
Personally, I'm no fan of the original films, so I haven't decided whether to see this or not yet.

A Shot in the Dark is my favorite, despite the fact that it is indeed not a film involving the pink panther The original pink panther is the only decent one of the lot, the rest are so cheesy it makes my eyes bleed.

omfg they didn't use the original theme??? or even a remix of it? That's so lame I think I'll be sick...

none, i thought it was fine. I for one, don't care if a new movie is nothing like it's classic, or if a movie is nothing like a book, etc.
I just watch the movie like it's it's own movie.

It was a funny, well made, movie.
now quit your whining

Peter Sellers is god. How dare they attempt to replay his most famous role that doesn't include him riding on a nuke.

Hollywood has run out of ideas, apparently, and it's very, very disturbing. I've seen more original plotlines come out of my scritwriters in "The Movies" than I've seen in Hollywood in the past years, and that's pretty sad.

I always thought Steve Martin films were good for a chuckle (or would that be *chuckle*) and thinking about it there are some similarities between some of his comedy, and the comedy in the original PP.

Now, on a related-ish topic. Is the "using pen to hold evidence" scene in the origianl PP or am I thinking of something else?*

I take it Joel hasn't seen any of the original movies. That would be like remaking Naked Gun starring Jim Carrey as Frank Drebben. Not exactly a good match if you ask me.

No, no, Joel is entitled to his opinion whether or not he's seen the original movies, just as I am to mine.

I disagree Joel. I've seen it, and while it was giggle-worthy, it was an autrocity to have anyone, even a comic goldmine like Steve Martin, try to fill the shoes of Peter Sellers. It just doesn't work.

Steve martin made some good movies, and some bad movies. Most of his good movies are not in a similar style to Peter Sellers movies, and most of his movies were not portraying such a complex character as a stupid french policeman. Steve Martin is way zany, or way serious, and a bit camp. Sometimes he looks gay as Inspector Cleuseu which is irritating.

Yes! That was the problem. I think Steve Martin does the best job as an average guy, like in Trains Planes & Automobiles.

I thought the movie was pretty humorous, although it can't be compared to the old movies. It didn't suck(I laughed a lot), but it wasn't exactly the best movie I've seen.

I can't do that. I can't just tune out that I'd seen these characters doing these same things in the past. If they re-made a true classic, like Citizen Kane or Network or Roots or something of that caliber, I think my head would literally explode.

I much prefer Peter Sellers role(s) in Dr. Strangelove or "how I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb". Although I find the old Pink Panther movies immensly funny.

As for the remake, It does look quite bad, but thats Hollywood for ya.

Took the Kids to see PP yesterday. They're 7 and 8 and they never stopped laughing all th eway through. And I don't mean chuckling slightly, I mean out-loud, can't stand up belly-laughter.

As a stand-alone film, it's good family entertainment (although I'd rather they removed the reference to the "Wonder Pill for Middle-Aged Men").

As a remake of the original PP, it's dire. It should have been marketed as a Steve Martin film and all would have been fine. He could have put his own mark on it then, rather than trying to imitate Peter Sellers imitating a Frenchman.

And Inspector Clouseau never drove a Smart Car.

Yeah, from what I saw in the preview, his accent doesn't sound french, or cluseau-ish. I was gonna go see it, but I found a better movie to watch instead.
