Congrats Joel. See ya! (*warning to non-mormons: LDS lingo used*) I can't send in my papers until September. I won't be old enough until December. For now I'm just hanging out at the Y. I actually had three farewells this Sunday. Crazy stuff. I actually have a brother in the Philippines and one in South Korea right now. The one in the Philippines only has three or so months left before he comes home.
(*Now to non-mormons*) We don't just knock on doors for two years. A lot of the time you do work similar to the peace corps where you help people build homes, get food, etc. It's also a great oppurtunity to get away from home, see a different place, learn a new language, and-if you go to BYU- potentially get school credit. And while the LDS Church strongly encourages people to go (especially the men), you won't get kicked out or anything if you don't.

yes i believe its a very harmfull drug, causes sudden urges to waste 2years of ones life, some cases even include feeling the need to goto some dark cell they call a church, to cure all you need is a blunt weapon preferably a rock and strikes ones head untill unable to.

Joe Cooning, you're LDS? you're at the Y? goodness, for all i know i've seen you everywhere!

My friend is there, she lives in DT. so, if you're living there too (I assume so, because you're probably a freshman) if you ever remember seeing a REALLY tall (6'6") loser, with a really short girl, that was meh

soapyfish:
hehehe, that's awesome

Cool we do something similar in my church - people spend a year travelling around europe in groups witnessing, fundraising and stuff together. Everyone says it's a great experience...which I guess it must be (I haven't been though) Most people go in their late teens/early twentys, like a gap year between college and uni.

I don't live at DT. My house is about a 20-30 minute drive away, so it's a lot cheaper. It allows me to save up the cash to go on a mission too.
(and to everyone else): LDS stands for Latter Day Saint. You can find out more here=>http://www.lds.org. Most Mormons don't consider a mission a waste of time becasue of all of the things you experience and learn. A lot of people get to go to different counrties, too, which also makes it fun.

Oh...and for fun

I suggest not being so synical, its your rude outbursts against another religion (espicially when you know nothing about them, which im sure you dont) that give atheist a bad name - so stop it.

Anyway Joel, I hope you acomplish what you set out for, have fun!

Two years is a long time, but I spent six in the military not making games. I just had a lot of catching up to do. Maybe by the time Joel gets back we'll be making 4D games, with body gloves and such. People on the forum will be complaining about how much the Dark Glove SDK costs.

Anyway, good luck Joel. Hope you find something worth finding.

well i have no clue what joel is going to be doing but in my experience i see housing estates that get raided daily by people knocking on doors, but why do they do it? i just cant imagine why anyone in the world would be suddently converted by hearing about what someone did 2k years ago so we should follow them, how is it even possible for anyone to get converted? unless theres an actual true god that magically makes pots of gold appear everywhere every week then how can people be converted? if you ask me i would need to proof and on a regular basis not some book that was written soo long about that it could have been faked. the only reason i can picture someone being interested in religion is if there parents/family are all religious then they are basically forced into being religios.

I disagree. Sometimes someone knocking at the door might be the right answer for someone.

Certainly, religion can provide a purpose and a focus that someone cannot get anywhere else. And for the "pot of gold", it might be a ready made support group. There are lots of people that have no support group to speak of, and are really moved by the message and the sense of community.

My point, besides everything I already said ^ - it's not something you can knock without understanding it. Hell, I'm not a Mormon, or either particularly religious, and I have even have some pretty unorthodox spiritual views. And, Joel and I have exchanged some pretty ugly words in the past. But hey, who cares? His life is about to change, and he feels strongly about that change. Good for him. More people need something to feel strongly about. If religion gives you only that, then it has given you something worth having.

I agree with Cash Curtis, and I can even attest to it. About a year ago, my current drummer (also named Joel) was playing drums so loud that everyone around could hear him. And he was inside. He lives across the street from a Nazarene church, and one day the pastor from the church came and knocked on his door. His mom answered, and after the pastor asked for whoever played the drums, his mom though that he was going to tell him he was being too loud. Instead, it turned out that the church band was out a drummer and they wanted him to join instead. He decided to do it, and a couple months later, I was also added on to that band. At first we told ourselves that it was for band and performing experience, as neither of us believe in a powerful being in the sky who creates and judges and whatnot, but after having a very successful country band which would gives us more than enough experience compared to the church gigs, we still continue playing with the church band to this day. We can't very well say it's because we like the other members in the band, because it's the same people who make up the country band as well. My main reason for staying, and his as well, is more for the community feeling that you get when you're part of a church. This is how I feel most people feel about church when they are asked about it, and nowadays churches have become more about a community and fellowship than anything. Of course, none of my experience with the church (other than doing my Eagle Scout project there) would have happened if it weren't for one bald pastor who knocked on someones door some months ago and asked him to be part of the church.

So basically the door thing works.

It probably fails 99 out of 100 times, but if you knock on 100 doors a day and get one taker, I bet it's all worth it.

In church the other day, the pastor was talking about a poll, I forgot the details of it, but I know it was a poll asking "What is your reason for not going to church?" or something along those lines. Well a fairly high percentage, around 40% if I remember correctly, said that they were waiting to be invited. And in fact many teens in my area who never would have seemingly given a second thought about church before are now members of a church. From my perspective it seems religion is growing more than it is dying, which can't be too bad, as long as we don't enter that pre-Martin Luther stage again.

according to statistics, they say for every 1000 doors we knock on, we will get 100 people to listen, and for every 100 people get to listen to us, 10 will be interested, but only 1 will be baptised.
