Alienware is awesome, why not buy from them? (other then the obvious fact that most of us don't have that kind of money)

Well... ignoring what dark coder said...

I will never buy an Alienware computer because it seems a large chunk of the price is the name rather than the components. That and a flashy green box. Sure, their computers are superb, but overpriced when you consider you can make something like that and save a lot of money.

I agree with you Saikoro. I've always liked their product lineup, but will never have that kind of money to toss out for one of their laptops or desktops. Using other computer places I've built the same pc for 60-80% less in cost.

No joke, building is the way to go. In the long run with upgrades and what not, it's a lot easier.

Building your own computer is so easy, it's just electronic Lego. Dell is for the computer beginners club, or Noobie Club. I like Alienware design, I don't tend to splash out money on a pretty box, but I don't buy the cheapest either. Dell were pretty much cheapo boxes before, worse than mine, so this is a good move for them. The advertising on TV will make a big difference with Alienware cases, should attract a lot of attention. the average person would not have seen modded computers before.

If they keep their existing marketing team, and way of doing things then I doubt they will be on TV. Dell will pretty much stay advertising simple Dell hardware, without say 'also, you can go on www.alienware.com which we also own'.

I don't know where you live, but in England Dell often use TV advertising.

Yeah, once you've had home built, you never go back. My machine cast me about £1700 to build (monitor/picture in picture TV, 5.1 surround sound kit, sony digital box etc. hense the high price), and looking at the market at the time I reckon £2500 to buy off the shelf.

It's a joke! It took my half a day to put it together and half a day to figure out the RAID bios settings etc and get windows installed. I bought a Gigabyte motherboard which basically gives you all the cables you need and primary school level step by step sheet for plugging everything in.

I personally think the Alienware boxes look tacky. Alienware can die. Dell can burn in hell.

Surely if Dell machines were well built you would never need to call their support line?

Dell is so AWSOMELY over priced. Or at least with laptops, sure you can get a cheap can't do nothing system, but who wants THAT?

Besides that fact, I am not an idiot. If my system screws itself up, I can usally fix it. And if not, I have a ghost of windows, so no problem.

Dell's are only really good for business machines (the specifications are pretty poor for anything else) - hence the reason they brought Alienware; they want to get a decent games machine out. I suspect shortly they will start introducing a new games desktop machine in the Dell lineup (quietly borrowed from Alienware).

And probably, in a few years Alienware will be totally incoporated into Dell...

I don't see why dell would have any problem making a games machine, it's just a matter of using different componants. I suspect they just wanted the name. People who buy that type of computer are going to be put off if it has the same name on the front as the computer their gran uses. It was probably just cheaper to buy alienware than create their own brand and build it up.

By way of demonstration, he emitted a batlike squeak that was indeed bothersome.

I reckon that Dell computers will look Alienware anyway, so basically, both will have to appear on screen at the same time.

Other than for the name I don't see why they combined with AlienWare. Dell already had the XPS gaming system which was comparable to an Alienware. Either way I couldn't give a crap. Home built computers rule

Let's see all you "home builders" build your own laptop. While I agree that it's best to custom build your own machine, it's not like you can pick up a laptop shell from somewhere and customize the insides (at least not where I live).

Actually, people should be building laptops, but the modding cases etc are not around. I think it's only months away, because laptops need to keep up with changing technology the same as every other computer.

Indeed, just about the only thing you can't buy to build your own notebook is the case/monitor, and if you can, I can't find it. So homebrewed laptops are still more of a thing to rise in the future, but it'll happen eventually :p

What's funny is, we just had a huge debate on these forums about Dell vs. Alienware vs. Home-built not too long ago (a few weeks at best), and I was the only one really avidly supporting alienware (I think, anyway, I might be wrong). But so much for that support... I won't be suggesting them anymore, not if Dell owns them I hate Dell even more now!

How strange...

Back on topic, my PC's Home-built, and my next one will be, and I recommend to anyone who wants a new PC that they build their own, and would be happy to build it for 'em for $20

Alienware always seemed over priced to me... They charge way too much just because it's them that're selling it.

And, Dell... Well, I don't like Dell PCs. Never have... I have a particular hate for all pre-built PCs from big companies ( Esp HP/Compaq - Damn them and their custom parts! )

I dunno, I find that you can get a reasonable work computer pretty cheap from them. I thought about the xps but its just too much money, but on the whole dell isnt too bad. my cd burner exploded the second day I had the machine but after that all was smooth, and its been 4 years now (time for an upgrade)

it`s hard to see where they are going with this, Dell buying Alienware is like Lada buying Ferrari, it doesn`t do any favours for Ferrai`s/Alienwares reputation and Dell/Lada customers won`t know what the fuss is about, they just want basic, cheap, Lada like cars...er...computers, pretty pointless IMO.

I've always liked Dell for their towers. Never had a real problem and always found them to be pretty cheap, especially with their constant promotion offers. As for laptops, Dell's certainly used to suck but I think they are getting better now.

The only thing I've ever had go wrong with a dell is my monitor burning out. Despite being a month past my warrantee they still replaced it for free. No complaints about them from me

im perfectly content with my $300 emachine that i got from walmart 2 thanksgivings ago....does the job, has a reasonable grpahics card, i dont really need much more, i dotn see the point of getting a 1 or 2 grand computer just so you can play games with pretty graphics...i pretty much use my computer for the interent and dbp, and then the 360, n64, and ds for games

Our office has Alienware PCs - what a crazy mess that was. For the graphics cards we ordered (top of the line ones) the drivers weren't out of beta, so we had to order in about 40 'lesser' graphics cards and fit them all ourselves and use older drivers until the drivers for the uber cards (2 in each machine, I can't remember the brand) finally got up to speed.

Took ages, and there were loads and loads of mixups along the way. And they're green. (Ick!) I managed to avoid getting one in the big change, my PC is a little older, but far more stable.

On the other hand, someone I knew in the past had an Alienware machine, and the customer service for his PC bordered on the scary. One day, he was driving along the motorway and his mobile starts ringing, so his girlfriend answers it. It was Alienware, "Excuse us, but you seemed to be having trouble installing something on your machine yesterday?". He hadn't called them, or mailed them or anything - they'd just picked it up from his PC sending little messages 'home', and called to ask if they could help. Freaked him out badly!
