Deadline is June 10th

As I mentioned in my weapon conversion thread, I want to start a scifi weapon contest. Here's what I have planned:

Each weapon submitted will be given a grade of 1-10 by each of the judges. The one given by each judge will be totaled up and diveded by the number of judges (lets see..what's that called again?). The ones who total 10 will be the first on the list, 9 second, ect ect.

Rules:
*Weapons must be your own work - no submitting someone else's
*NO Animation Required - Spend more time on the weapon itself
*Must Be Textured
*All Weapons must be 100% free (even for commercial use) and able to be given to the community
*Previously done work is acceptalbe, but new work is encouraged.
*Must fit Scifi theme - no wild west ect. (that comes later )
*New sounds are NOT required.
*Only have to do the model itself (you don't have to put it in game), however it may be sometime so don't overdo plolies!

If anyone things rules should be added please tell me!

What you'll get if you win:
*The joy of giving to the community
(Sorry, but I can't afford real prizes)
EDIT: Oh, and yo get to brag and boast about winning and rub it in all the other contestents faces! j/k

All FINISHED entries e-mail me with a zip containing the gun and a jpeg render of it (used to show off during the comp).

The top 10 (or 15, or 20, or 500 - still deciding, probally depending on the number of entries) will be made FPSC ready by me and posted in an easy to install pack complete with the pickups. Use of it will be incuded in its license agreement (mainly saying credit must be given to the following authors: blablablablababa you get the point)

Deadline: June 10th

P.S. Feel free to show off renders of entries here (finished or not)

If your interested in judging please contact me via the e-mail button.

It's a very good idea, and a nice way of getting some new weapons into the public pool, i might have a crack at a new gun

If anyone needs new weapon sounds I'd be happy to help with that. Good idea Conner, hope to see some people working on this.

So this is a submission contest and the best 10 will get listed.... Awesome idea... My problem is im going to want to give this a try but what about a gun that work for stick figures count if I put a space helment on my stick guy.... j/k

I will certianly give it a try but being very new to modeling I wouldnt hold my breath on any of my works to hit the top ten... unless there are only 9 others that submit... Oh to think my work could get listed by default....oh what a dream....hehehe

Have you downloaded your CLiPs today.

Thanks! Now, any ideas for deadlines (preferably from good modelers who know how long it can take to do this).

Also, the number released to the community will depend on how many entries. 10 will probally be a good generic amount though.

New sounds aren't required for the submission, but we might need you on getting the pack together so all the new weapons don't sound the same

If anyone does make their gun sounds or wants to I wouldn't stress over it - again, it is not required.

The only stipulation I would have is that each weapon would retain the author's license (the same one I use for all my free stuff); or a general pack license that satisfies all the creator's. The problem I have is time spent on other things right now. I would suggest at least a month to get all entries in, if you want something of quality.

Good idea. As I said before at the top, the liscense (which will be made technical and stuff later) should simply be free for commercial and non-commercial use provided credit is given.

Lets see - one month - I'm thinking the deadline should be the end of April? I'll still have to decide but it's that for now.

One of the biggest things for me (aside form what you have mentioned) is that the user is not allowed to redistribute the model, or package it up to be sold in whole or in part. That could be difficult if all artists do not agree. But I'll see how you word it, before donating to a group pack.

Ya, I ment to mention that. That is the #1 thing I'd put for any models. I'll try and get a sorta license agreement done for all entries to look at later and debate upon in order to add/delete from it. I warn you, I'm no lawyer, so chances are there will be a lot to change!

And, out of curiousity, what kind of gun do you plan on making?

Well, I don't see what's wrong with it, but it limits what the user can do with it. This argument has been brought up before, too. You could do it, but I wouldn't reccomend it.

This might be fun.....im so burnt out on medieval modeling and texturing I was thinkin of doing some sci-fi.

Note To All You Modelers: Just got ZBrush2, two days ago....OMG*soils self* If you spend any money on a prog in the next 3 years you have to have this tool. I mean its a far cry from anything a game could use but for the title screen and render images.....working with up to 3 million polys and not having your comp puke is outta hand. Being able to paint on textures on the fly adds amazing detail.

So when is the deadline on this Conner. You need to set us a date when models have to be turned in and when the judging takes place. I've pretty much got a model done, just working on the last of the textures.

Cool! Remember, it does need a texture, as it is hard to tell wether that's a texture with plain colors or just colors. FPSC, as far as I know, does not support colors defined by the model, at least with entities.

Here is my WIP, but I am not positive that I can actually submit it into the contest. I may not have the time to finish it and get it into FPSC. Here it is anyways.

i am afraid i am a bit of a photoshop novice

for textures i do a image search on google image search until i find a nice side photo or a front photo then i model from two planes in 3ds max with the texture loaded on

i should read up on creating my own textures

but afraid i dont own a scanner

so this is the best i can do to get round this problem at the moment

beside where is the image from you got me paranoid now

Man, my models suck compared to Jons and crows. How do you guys UV mapp so good? I can UV map but I can never get it perfect enough to paint on. Look at this UV map I made for my character. Any pointers to make it better?

I usually do it the same way that crow does it. Using the reference picture as the texture. I am trying to get into UV mapping and I am getting a bit better with gimp. I have photoshop but my mom is using it on her computer so I cannot use it on mine.

yep, but if the tops are rounded, you sometimes dont notice it, and it only stretches a tiny bit...

i simply cant be bothered for a non-rewarding contest, so i didnt take vast time to unwrap and toouch up seams, whereas in "our" style its all pulled together and texturing it is just like drawing the gun itself

Great stuff! Oh, crow, the gun texture is based on the machinegun from Quake 4, but you can still enter it if you did the mesh. I'll have to make that one non-comercial use, but it is still acceptable

Anyone want to be judges? Crow?

Oh, Jon, that gun is amazing! I can't wait to see it in game.

Edit: Havok, I like your gun too! Should look good once it's textured.
