The model I am using in my spaceship game is offset from the center.

This means I never know exactly where it is.

Any suggestions on how to determine the ships exact position other than collision detection?

Load it into a modelling program, and move your object into the middle of the screen, then resave it. Some modelling packages require you to move the origin, others have an option to reset it in the centre.

Anim8or is free...

Go to edit/locate/centre about origin.
