I am pleased to announce that the Horizontal Shooter with BOSS Competition results are in!! A carefully designed competition site has been created which features all the games with screenshots, reviews, and downloads, as every game has been rated, reviewed, and organized from greatest to worst! The competition was 3 months long, there are a lot of great games, but only one is the best!

If you go to http://www.shmup-dev.com/hcontest you’ll be able to view every game, along with reviews from three different judges which ultimately lead to a score. There are lots of great game themes from fantasy, to space, to cartoon, and more!!

Not at all Anime, but hey, there were 3 judges and each scored them accordingly. Of course there are going to be people that disagree, if there wasnt then I'd think there was some sort of conspiracy LOL

Congrats to the winners, and I wish we got a bit higher, but nevermind. The comp got me interested in making more games anyway.

Hey guys, dont be offended if the judges didnt like your game. Remember, YOU <> Your Game!!

Well, I guess a lot of people here must have thought Krait was going to get a higher score because it has one of the absolute best graphics in the competition.

I said from the beginning we'd mostly be judging on games we thought were the most FUN. Unfortunately, for Krait, I did not find it as enjoyable as the games that ranked higher. If you read my review I discuss how the animations were twichy and the movement patterns were not smooth.

I also went over the spider(the big blue spider's behavior lowered the games potential score) and also the boss that was amazingly easy( a very easy boss that all I had to do is stay in ONE spot to kill it, that also lowered the score). Those were all things that dropped its score (for me) - The graphics were AWESOME, but this is NOT a graphics contest.

That's why UFO's game got a higher score, it was more fun, although the graphics weren't anything remotely close to Krait, the game was a helleva lot more fun!

I cant help but to guess that some people here think this is a graphics contest?

Prototype took the cake because I still play it today, it has the highest replay value and in my opinion is superior in game-play polish, and detail.

I still think most of the games were pretty fun though, and there were a LOT of good games, and when there are a lot of good games, you'll see some good games near the bottom (because their are better geames) - Overall this competition reeled in a TON of great games, and if you read blogs out there a ton of people raved about how great the competition was as it brought in lots of fun games.

Nobody loses here, because most of the games were way too much fun!!

I'm sorry to anyone who didnt get to the top, but hey, I wasnt the only Judge!! SOme of the games I gave an 8 or so were given a low score by other judges and vice versa.

I really hope you guys check out the competition site, I put 8 straight hours into design and also spell checked everything. The reviews are all solid, and there are 3 reviews for each game!

All the best,
Matt McFarland

well your assumption was wrong as my favorite wasnt krait, i liked #15 perhaps if you had slid the graphics up then it would look alot better and imo the gameplay of that was far superior to alot of the game that scored higher, i guess that means that the menu was judged on 80% of the score?

also i have no problem with the winner as that game was very fun, however #2 was my big beef, the main problem is its not exactly a side scroller as i scrolled to the side then found the end of the map, not to be rude but the gameplay wasnt that great as you couldent rotate your ship, atleast i couldent find a way to.

also i think you should have submitted a review of each game as to best of my judgment it seems you only tested each game for 5mins and judged it on how close to rtype it was.

maybe later ill try and play all the games but some didnt run off my pc which was rather annoying, none the less im not being a fanboy for any of the db/p games i couldent care less if they were made in blitz and the winners were dbp i would probably still post the same.

I LOOOVED funky Space!!!! It was like DEFENDER (ever play defender before? yes its a side scrolling shmup, check the wiki)

I spent days testing the games thank you very much. I can tell you're rather quick to judge as you've pretty much judged this contest in about 5 minutes!! (lol) Also, where do you get off saying that I compared the games to R-type? Hello? Funkyspace at #2?

Also there were 2 other judges in the competition (did you notice?) that are independant shareware developers who happen to love shmups. Yeah SHMUP THIS! was a fun game (read my review please, only ONE sentance out of the whole paragraph mentioned the GUI thank you) but it wasnt THAT fun, it got a 6/10. Look Nexic hit it with a 5.00 he thought it dragged on and on. Maybe if you were in his place you could have given it a 9 or 10 and then it would be higher ranked.. It was a THREE MAN EFFORT. Much better than a one man effort.

Which ones did you play anyways?

well as i said ill test all the games tomorrow, but my main problem is that this is a sidescroller with boss compo, where you had to basically make a demo of what could be a full game right? and you said yourself that some games didnt last very long or werent that challenging, but what do you expect? these are just level 1`s and are supposed to be easy and not exactly long as there would be lots of levels, so it should have been judged on what was there than what wasnt.

and i guess #1 got away with this because the level is very long though i kinda died too many times so i couldent see how long it was, and #2 got around this by not making any levels as such, perhaps im wrong and didnt read the rules/criteria of the compo which just having a brif look on the site/forums i cannot find, and the reason im defensive is because ive entered many compos that in my eyes have been fairly judged even if i accidnelty forgot to include some files and didnt get a score :p. but this is the 1st compo that i believe the judging criteria was slightly misleading to the compo theme, as #1 from what i played seemed very professional but imho the gameplay wasnt that fun as there were a few annoying things and not to mention everything was taken from r-type.

I'm just another person like you, and I have an opinion, like you. That's why I added TWO Judges. If you actually notice, I gave Cognizance an 8, but the other judges didnt like it.

I dont think you'd be pleased either way.. Even if I pleased you, some other Joe Blow would be unhappy. Well I didnt put this competition together to cause people to complain / moan but I guess that's a side effect.

The bottom line is I put a LOT of effort into this competition, and it is my very first competition! Thanks to everyone else who entered and thanks to all for checking the site out..
