I'm the new proud owner of a Power Mac G4, and would like to know if anyone here has any good free mac games from the internet they know about. I have tried google, and have not come up with almost anything...except AA, which makes me happy!

Yes, Mac has games. Some very current and popular games as well but is not intended as a gaming machine in as much as Windows.

It IS a development and multimedia machine. I bought my minimac to help me with crossplatform development and access to UNIX(*BSD) and UNIX Sockets.

If you seriousley paid for a G4 for the soul purpose of gaming? That was a serious waste of some excellent hardware.

* "This pervasive BSD flavor may be why there is confusion about Mac OS X being "based on the BSD kernel." It's not; it's based on Mach. But Mach by itself does not a kernel make. The "officially blessed subsystem" running on top of Mach is BSD, but it is not "the BSD kernel." The BSD kernel manages its own memory and processes and does its own hardware abstraction. The BSD subsystem in Mac OS X uses Mach's implementation of these services. Finally, the BSD subsystem exists in the same address space as Mach for performance reasons, but this incorporation does not break any of Mach's modular interfaces."

I'm guessing you're running Tiger, if so:

Click the blue apple (top-left)
Click Mac OS X Software
On the page this takes you too click games (on the left)
Hey presto, a selection of freeware, shareware and demo games.

EDIT:: Something else for you to try if you're bored. open Terminal (Applications>Utilities>Terminal) and type
press enter and sit back and enjoy Star Wars Episode IV in all its ascii glory.

I didn't buy it...I was given it. And, that's not all I bought it for: but like the majority of the people on this forum, I am a gamer, and as such like playing games. I will definitely use it to do multimedia stuff, but I also want to have gaming fun on it.

[edit] I have windows. It's just the mac is the one with high speed internet, so I tend to use it more...[/edit]

@ soapyfish: Yeah, he heh, not sure why that came out. I meant that's not all I use it for.

@dark coder: it's a long story, but it ended with a networking whiz in tears.

Don't be too suprised, this guy we call Mack gave his decent laptop away for free when he got a new PC, plus it could be from a relative instead, heck my PC is a 'hand me down'

@Megaton Cat
I can't remember the exact date but adobe has made a point of saying none of their pro apps will be compatable with the intel macs until 2007. Just something you graphics types might want to consider if you're going to use it mainly for 'graphicking'

Not sure about Macromedia though, I don't think I've seen any comments from them like that.

Is that some sort of joke? Are you saying Photoshop CS2 won't run on the latest Mac notebook? O_o

Thank god I'm a Macromedia person...even though Adobe bought them out.

However, there a one 3D application that is now fully Intel mac compatible and thats C4D, as for 2D, either wait, or get C4D with Bodypaint

That's a big load of help. C4D sucks.

@Megaton - To be fair, you can use the powerpc version on Intel Macs but it has to use an emulator called rosetta. Obviously this slows down any app it's used with. So, whilst photoshop would be useable it wouldn't be convenient if you were relying on it for your day-to-day work.

Here's a pretty good description of the whole thing:
http://www.infomaticsonline.co.uk/vnunet/news/2152762/adobe-balks-intel-mac

…and some quotes.

Quote: "The newest version of Photoshop, CS2, was released in April last year. Adobe declined to give a projected release date for the next version, but said that it typically takes 18 to 24 months.

This would indicate that an OS X Intel-ready version of the application could take until April 2007."

I've seen a more precise release date somewhere else, maybe digg.com, hunt around and you should find it.

@ Flindiana
Almost forgot, I bought Civilization 3 Complete a few months ago. Okay so it looks dated (and Civ 4's been given a Mac release date now, not that it'd run on my ibook) but for playing a game for hours on end it's pretty good. I don't understand what I'm doing ALL the time (it's one of those 'inscruction manual on the disc' jobbies) but I'll probably end up buying a strategy guide that explains it all, should keep me entertained over Easter.

theres a lot of ignorant kiddies in this forum lately who are biased towards one platform.
its like holdens vs fords.
there is also a lot of games on the mac you cant play on the pc, unless emulated.

OPENGL 3d games run a lot faster then Direct X games, thats why I kick ass in many FPS style games using a g5. try opengl on your pc one day and check out your fps scores.

There is a free wolfenstein multiplayer port for free on the mac and pc, as well as many other games.

depending on what kind of game you like, you will have to decide.
have you tried ev nova by ambrosia for a space game, its fun.

I still play diablo II and warcraft III on the mac sometimes.
I have Dragons Lair and space ace for the mac which are brilliant games from eons ago.

try google its not that hard.

OS X runs faster with INTEL based chipsets and has done since the inception of OSX to the mac platform. Apple had been compiling it on PC architecture for years.

Core Image features out now built into the framework of mac os x could easily help create your own mini photoshop its just that the refinement of fifteen years shop has cant be caught up with in many areas.

http://arstechnica.com/reviews/os/macosx-10.4.ars/15

Most of the features in OS x are not hardware dependent anymore as they have layered subset components which allow you to build on top of them regardless of your architecture below. photoshop's binary issue is a pain yes for intel macs.

Since most programs coming out now in graphic intensive areas for the mac are using Quartz extreme components ( Using your GPU instead of your CPU to runt he windows environment). This basically opens the doorway to REALTIME goodies for sound image and video.

have you seen the quartz and core featured packages for free on the mac.?

imagetricks
pixelshox
live quartz

you can play many game on the g4, depending on its video card for the higher end games.

nicely done to score a g4 btw, I have a g4 800 with 1.5 gigs of ram and a BlueATI sapphire with 300 gigs of space.

If no-one gives your an answer to a question you have asked, consider:- Is your question clear.- Did you ask nicely.- Are you showing any effort to solve the problem yourself 

I don't think many games will phase this computer: It's got 2 gig of ram, a GeForce4 Ti 4600 graphics card, 270 gigs hard drive space, a DVD-RW drive, and a like anice processor I'm not sure of the exact specs of...so yeah, I'll be able to run most games. BTW indi, what's up with my signature killing? It's perfectly under 600 x120...and it's only 12.6 Kb in size.

I hate macs. When I go to my friends house (he has one), I say, "where's the computer?"

EDIT: actually, a GeForce4 Ti 4600 graphics card is kind of old. I know someone witha GeForce 5700 who has trouble running Battlefield 2.

Sorry, your not comedian.

Just to voice my opinion. I don't know much about graphics cards but I do know that you don't need some top-notch, whizz bang, brand spanking new ultra card to have fun. Like I said, I can sit and play Civ 3 'till the cow come home. I'll probably get myself Diablo 2 before long (see what all the fuss is about).

There's a bunch of games on garagegames that are compatible with Mac.
