OK this is probably very BASIC but... when I make an object say a cube with BACKDROP OFF it leaves a trace of where it was before. How do I make it rotate just as it would with BACKDROP ON?

There are 2 ways to stop the problem:

Put the Backdrop On, that's what it's there for
Make sure the "blue screen" is not visible. The blue represents nothingness. In a game you would never have nothing...you would be in a room, or a street, or have sky or space. Skyboxes and Skyspheres are the common solution, search on these and you'll find lots of discussion about them.
