I find that no matter what music software you go for, they all take a lot of learning, so really you might be better off trying a lot of demo's. Like there's so many options now, like powerful sound trackers with plugin support. I've used quite a lot of music software (which is strange given my lack of talent) - sadly the only one that I could be creative with is Music on the Playstation!.

You might want to reconsider Cubase given the price, I'm sure you'd find something much cheaper that does all you need. You should grab one of the computer music magazines, I think 'Computer Music' is still in production, that would have a rundown of the best software, plus lot's of nice demos to play with.

I bought a cheap one called Jam-it, comes with a microphone. It does Robot, baby, echo, and things like that. Not very professional, but OK for games.

I'm pretty sure that you can Google a lot of free trackers on the net to make short music clips or whatnot, but if editing music is what you need, there are plenty of products to choose from. I've found Cool Edit/Adobe Audition to be quite easy to use, and for the general tasks of editing live sound, its pretty much a click-and-done process with that. If you want to get really nitty gritty with the music, Cubase is also good to go because it has that same feel as Cool Edit with a bit more options. The one I use for mastering is Pro Tools, because, when coupled with the hardware, makes very clean sounds and any options that I can think of, it has.

digi design pro tools has a free version limited tracks to try.
cubase is really great
reason by propellarheads is good
acid foundry would go so well with sound forge
hammerhead rythym station is a free drumkit for pcs
goldwave and other such audio tools are pretty good for a bedroom banger
logic audio on the mac is pretty dam good.

protools break out box and professional suite would probably be the standard in most smaller studios now adays.

if you get ahold of a neve deck then that would ultimately rock! they are the size of a small room tho so you would need to move your bedroom under the stairs just to fit the console.

Indi that is freakin' awesome!

That free Pro Tools won't work on XP, so as long as you have an older OS lying around you're good. If price isn't a concern then go for one of the big pretty packages like Sonar or Cubase. I personally didn't like the demo of Acid I tried, but that's just meh. I use Sonar Home Studio and it works rather nicely.

I use Skale tracker. It's rubbish. But it makes no difference. It's not the software. It's the guy tweaking the knobs.
