I'm not sure, but I think you can only make .x files with a plug-in for 3d studio max (.x is the only filetype you can use when you want to import a 3d animation in DB)

you can code limb movement in db, and then save it as a .x file I think

Well you can easily load a .3ds in db 1.13 like

or you could look in the tools folder of darkbasic, put your .3ds file in there and run the 3ds to x utility which will keep all your animation and transfer your .3ds to an .x file.

Milkshape exports a .3ds easily so you shouldn't have a problem

but does milkshape store its animation data in the 3ds file - or is it only the model data that's stored in a 3ds file?

Yes that should work fine, .3ds contains animation data.
Lot's of people seem to be having problems with this, but you don't actually ever need to convert a file to a .x from a .3ds, it would give you some extra speed at loading time but that's about the only real-world difference you'll find in dbc at least.
DBC automatically converts files at load time and that's why it takes a few microseconds longer to load them
