Hey guys ,

Not sure whether this is the right place to post this question - but could anybody quote a name of two of any 3D Animation tools that can do animation movies, like Ice Age for instance. You know, with the 3D characthers and all.

Thanks - Neo Kjollen

Blender.
http://www.blender3d.org
It's free. But it scared me when I first tried to use it. A bit like toilets.

HASH:Animation Master.
It's not free, and there's no demo, so I don't like it.

Maya is the most common used for film. It only works on Windows 2000 I think. Well the one I once LOOKED AT did.

You wouldn't really use it for games though. Just use Anim8or it's free. Well I suppose nobody can afford MAYA unless they can get it free anyway.

As soapy pointed out, Blender is fab. I've been telling people about it since Scraggle started his "free stuff" thread and thus far people have told me they dig it. Another 3D modeling/ animation app to check out is anim8or (www.anim8or.com). That's also free and far less intimidating than blender... the tradeoff is that it can't do as much stuff. But it has an easily-understood user's manual with an ample amount of samples and stuff... definitely worth checking out before you go drop over a grand on 3DSMax.

I'll try to list as many as possible

Maya - Expensive
3DSMax - Expensive
Houdini - Difficult and very expensive
Lightwave - Moderate
Cinema 4D- Moderate
Poser - Generates models, so lack of originality but average priced
Softimage XSI - Average/Moderately priced
TrueSpace 7 - Needs a powerful PC, Moderately priced
TrueSpace 6 - Like 7, but doesn't use a next gen scene renderer, so you don't need a powerful PC
Carrara - I don't know much about this, but it come free with this months 3D world Magazine
Blender - Free, powerful, harder than most
Anim8or - Free, Doesn't compare in power to other applications in the market or Blender, not very good for games, but is easy
Hash Animation master - Looks great, cheapish, its powerful, it was used to make those adverts for Tak: The power of Juju, no demo, but the website is full of animations and renders.
Shade 7 - Cheapish/moderate, I don't know much about this app
EIAS, again I don't know much, Moderate price
Strata 3D CX, Just another app listed

Price key
Very Expensive up to or over £8000
Expensive - £700 - £5000
Moderate £300-£700
Average £150-£300
Cheapish £70-£150
Cheap £1-70

[Edit]
Maya was used for Ice Age 2 and many similar movies
3DS Max is more widely used in the gaming industry, Prince of Persia i s a good example
Cinema 4D was used in Gladiator, Van Helsing, The Polar express
Softimage XSI is more game used, like Metal Gear Solid
Poser is generally associated with perverts(Just look at Renderosity.com with all the poser models ), but is usually used for simulations because the person doesn't need to worry about modelling

I recommend Hash. My father uses it for his side-projects, and it's great. They also have a fundamentally different theory on 3D models, which is cool.

And there's a ton of stuff that you get for the relatively cheap-ish price.

On top of using Maya, you can get Renderman by Pixar as a plugin for it now. Expect to pay in the region of £900 for it though And if there's one decent photo-realistic renderer out there... its definately Renderman
