I am working on a comedy, and here's the preview for it! It's about 40 secondsish, and rar (it cut the size in half). Tell me what you think!

inherently awesome because i'm in it
yes... I... AM... THAT HERO!!!... AKA |-|3|20

the lightsabers waver a little bit when they are turned on, but that's because we had to stick them in frame by frame... and you have no idea how hard it is to keep them in the right place with no reference... (mine just ends in the sky... flynn's i could use the railing as a reference...)
then when they get in motion they look much better though

the best part has to be when i fly across the screen and smack henchperson #2 over the head... (the last shot)

You need more planning. This is like....

"I know let's do this...."

Then you do it. There are no second takes, no attempts to act. Running up the stairs even needs more work than that. Raising the arm is not right, too wobbly. If you want to impress people you need to work on getting the look right.

...how would you know? You can't hear dialogue (except once) and the arm wobbly thing, that was really me lifting a heavy (to me) backpack up above my head with one arm, and keeping it there. Very few of the clips shown were the first take; maybe 2 or 3. I wrote the ENTIRE SCRIPT two months before we ever started filming, and have planned out what we were going to film several days in advance of each filming session. I have how I want every scene to look in my head, and always apply that when we're filming. We ARE acting...I am not an evil villain in real life (yes, I'm the one with the purple lightsaber). And, what do you mean about the stairs? This is not supposed to be terribly impressive at all, except maybe the lightsabers. This is an amateur's first attempt at making a movie, which is supposed to be a comedy. I appreciate your feedback, but I'm not sure how you deduced half the things you did from the preview...

Well. I made a movie like that when I was 13. Now I know more about this stuff. I suppose it is hard to see from your point of view.

It is true that it would be harder to see from my point of view, but...I'm still not seeing how you could tell the amount of takes/planning/work put into it from a mostly dialogless preview...if you could tell me that, I would give you much more credence.

No, It's just that he doesn't know what he's talking about. Everything in that preview is how I want it, and I have known from square one that this is not going to impress anyone. If I wanted to make a movie to impress someone, there are TONS of things I would Do differently. If he had seen the whole movie, as well as been a part of the production process, THEN I would listen. However, right now all I am seeing are (not entirely unreasonable) hypothoses drawn from a very small, insufficient bit of evidence. *shrugs*

Quote: "Tell me what you think!"

You put that, and expect a response of some sort. You wrote this down months in advance? Ok so that is more than I expected. How did you write this down? There is a sabre fight, I run up the stairs, I raise my arm. What did you write down? Did you write....

I raise my arm in triumph!!!

That was not raised in triumph. It was raised because you had to raise it for the script. You could tell.

Exactly how you want it?

I don't think it is exactly how you originally saw it in your head.

Quote: "there's a difference between constructive criticism, and just criticism..."

This is constructive............

Quote: "There are no second takes, no attempts to act. Running up the stairs even needs more work than that. Raising the arm is not right, too wobbly. If you want to impress people you need to work on getting the look right."

Constructive means to aid, and my words are aiding.

Quote: "If I wanted to make a movie to impress someone, there are TONS of things I would Do differently."

Well what's the point of asking what people think then? You didn't want to impress anyone, so their response should be...

"I am not impressed."

Alright, to be 100% honest with you this wass my first idea of a way of sharing the preview with people...that's the main reason I posted it here. I also wanted to see what you guys would think of it from the preview I gave. Lastly, I wanted to see what you guys thought of my music/video synchronization skills. As I said, I don't want People to be impressed necessarily (though that would be nice); I want them to laugh.
I agree, if I had been what you said, ie: Not planning anything, not practicing, and not taking multiple takes, then that WOULD be constructive criticism. I was mainly railing at your making invalid assumptions about the movie, not so much the fact that you were critical. Here is a sample of the script (of the backpack raising part).

and I suppose if we want to be persnickety, it is not a pixel perfect match for what I had in my head. But, it's VERY VERY close, and I am very happy with it so far.

Hm. Well, to be fair, you did ask for critisizm. And when people give it to you, whether you see reasoning behind it or not, the first thing you should do if you never want critisizm again is to argue about it. I've found in my experience that rejecting critisizm by argument not only stops people from wanting to help, it can downright offend people who critisize you (not to say Pincho was offended). In my practices, whether a person gives helpful or nonhelpful, technical or unjustified, critisizm, I listen to what they have to say, ignore what critisizm I choose, and build off the rest. Pincho obviously saw flaws in your preview, and he was telling you what he found. I doubt that he was out to get you, as if you were some sort of nemesis or something of his.

*takes a slow, Deep breath* Yeah, it's probably true that I was a little defensive; I have been working on this for a long time, have put hours and hours into it (6 hours of lightsabers alone, less then half of the total time spent on those), and was quite happy with the finished project. So, I post a preview here and have someone tell me I didn't have second takes (untrue) there were no attempts to act (untrue, we do attempt to act... ) and that we had no planning (untrue). So, I got angry and defensive. I do appreciate his trying to set me on the straight and narrow, and realize I probably should just not answered his post directly. However, as I said, I felt my honour was on the line. Pincho, sorry I was so defensive, and thank you for your patience. And Saikoro, Thanks you for pointing that out.

@Phaelex: Thanks mate, Those took (as I said earlier) FOREVER to do. Makes me glad when people appreciate them...

BTW: I enjoyed the lightsabers as well. Not many people go through the trouble of actually making them expand and retract, and follow fluid motion. Kudos to that.

heh, looks reasonably amusing, good job mates I *almost* laughed out loud when the dude ran by and smacked the girl in the head right behind the two "dude, it's soooo boring" guys. Promising start, can't wait to see the final version

Only one complaint -> the duel in the gym looked aweful. At least get SOME interesting sword fights in there (the thingee with the lightsaber slide was cool tho') Of course, being a fencer for five years does give me a somewhat cynical eye towards swordfights Take a look at this, I'm not saying you're going to be able to do any of that, but it might give you some ideas towards lightsaber fighting...

Quote: "Only one complaint -> the duel in the gym looked aweful"

haha! i agree!

it's kind of hard to fight in that cardboard contraption though... it has stuff going all the way down the front to the knees, and the same on the back... and it's a bit wide too... on top of that we were improving that fight, the lightsaber fight we had planned out blow for blow... (well except for one small part were we crouch/walk under a tractor thing...)

there's a different part in the movie that we haven't filmed yet were the "Holy Shaman of Wisdom" does some training, and he's much better with a sword (having taken some classes of some sort or another)... so he might save the fight choreography a little bit...

*watching provided video* [edit] heh, pretty snazzy

Quote: "BTW: I enjoyed the lightsabers as well"

thanks! *humbly points out that he did over half of them, spending a total of at least 20 hours...*

i wince every time i see them turn on though... the ends of them waver quite a bit...

the lightsaber fight is only about 2 1/2 minutes... but at 30 frames a second it builds up

@Hawkeye: We actualy had to do some audio editing in that part (the whacking/falling) because the camera guy laughed... I would love to fight like they do in that video. (though THAT almost made me laugh, since it used music used in snow Island.) however, that would require LOADS of practice, as well as a lot of martial arts training and working out...

@megaton: That's...wierd. Very weird.

@Gowmars: Thanks!

adobe photoshop trial (i would have used the gimp but the tutorial flynn found was for photoshop...)

flynn should upload the entire lightsaber fight to further embarass us with our poor sword fighting skills...
(of course part of the problem is we have to make it look like we're trying to hit each other, but never actually do it )

@Pincho- thanks! you can export from adobe premier* to filmstrip (.flm) which will be a massive collaberation of all the frames that you exported all laid out.. well.. like a filmstrip... then it imports back in fine... of course if you read the tutorial i linked to you already know this... just hard to tell from your post if you did

*trial to, which was a real pain when it expired and we had to move the entire thing over to flynn's compy on an external harddrive through his uber slow usb port

I used Pinnacle Studios Version 9, MPEG 1 at 2400 Kb/s, CBR bit rate to encode it, after converting from DvAvi, NTSC compression.

lol, entertaining, although it would be nice if you guys would try to act rather than try to act like you're acting ... if that make sense?

Why was that dude jogging up the stairs? It looked like he was jogging up the stairs because it was in the script. Good lightsaber effects though. Frame by frame editting is harsh.

No no no, I think you got our question wrong... how did you edit the lightsaber into each frame of the movie? What program can show you each frame and have them editable?

@ Xenocythe: Adobe Premier 6.0 wil export all the frames in a specified range as a super massive image, composed of all the frames side by side by side. hten, you open up the image and draw the blades!

Ahh, in that case, it was convincing. But you get my point anyway. The best way to make an amateur movie convincing is with good acting, and I'm sure you've all got it in you. Are you gonna put the final film online for us all to check out?
