I put my pc (a dual boot between mandriva linux and windows xp pro) in hibernate mode with the intention of just going back as I often do, and I was in the middle of something so I just put it in hibernate and unplugged it to move it around, and when I plugged it back in, it kept saying grub failed error code 2., I tried the rescue disk for linux and it says that it couldnt find the disk, so I slapped in my copy of acronis true image and restored the windows partition (didnt have to but by the time I realized it was too late) but now ie is crawling and somtimes not even loading as if there are a mass of broken links. the question is, if the snapshot I took worked perfectly then, why wouldnt it work perfectly now?

noooooo! don`t unplug it while in hibernate, silly person, half the OS is still in ram and won`t be saved to disk , nana!

That's standby you're thinking of. Hibernation dumps it all to disk.

yeah, that's what I was thinking, unplugging should have no impact on hibernation.

ah! my bad, maybe the bootloader cuts in before winderz gets going and messes up, could be Windows reboots from a different point during hibernate (after all, it should be able to skip loading tons of stuff that will be in the HD ram image), and Grub doesn`t know about this, although tbh grub/Linux in general are not totaly in tune with all the different BIOS power management things (ACPMI?) due to a lot of them being propriatry, my lappy won`t shutdown/restart cos the ATI Linux driver doesn`t recognise being suspended to disk and just locks up, maybe you have some sort of issue like that?

ive hibernated and restarted into linux countless times, the only thing I did differently this time is unplug, which in theory is okay for hibernation.

yeah! trouble is not all the BIOS makers are known, they don`t release their code so they have to hack it to make it work, that can cause problems in some cases, sounds like this was one, maybe GRUB or LILO didn`t realise the power had been disconnected or something, well, you know next time .
