It's impractical to host web/file servers from your own home for several reasons.

The most obvious reason is that your residential broadband connection cannot handle the bandwidth required to serve more than let's say ... 5 people simultaneously. This isn't a problem if you're only planning to host the odd page for friends and family, but considering you've bought a domain name, that doesn't sound like the case.

Secondly, it could be in breach of your ISPs terms of service.

To answer your question, any machine can "handle" serving files to the web, it's just that slow ones do it slower People make web servers out of all sorts of things. My personal (biased) recommendation would be to put a light linux distribution on the machine and start playing!

One thing I've always wanted to do is redirect subdomains of my domain to specific machines in my house, like the xbox. Of course, I'd need to check that it was up before I actually redirected someone, but I figure it'd still be cool.

My cable ISP offers a $50 business upgrade that boosts upstream to 9mbits (~1.2mb/s), so it is entirely feasable to run servers from home. Granted, you won't have the bandwidth to be google, but you will have a respectable connection for serving.

I wrote a web server program in C# actually... ran it and it could serve files! Was pretty cool. Even had my own scripting lang in there too.

you and your scripting languages

my recomondations to seting up a webserver is to use apache (apache.org) as it is nicer than iis(m$ websever) imho, you caan do one quiet quickly by downloading their installer off the apache website, double click it and and a couple of clicks later you will have it running and installed on your system. But if it is for anything serious, then you need linux, fedora is qood (fedora.redhat.com), as with linux there are less backround programs running, which should improve performance; and there are also less viruses for linux than windows, snag is you will need to learn how to use a shell prompt to use linux to its full extent.

Dude, it's not a simple exercise. You probably want to use IIS (of which I have no experience) or Apache. You need to configure the web server, configure your router ... blah blah blah. It's an involved process and I doubt someone will be willing to hold your hand through the process. Like Jeku said, google is your friend.

I personally would take the opportunity to download a linux distribution and follow some tutorials.
