It's impractical to host web/file servers from your own home for several reasons.
The most obvious reason is that your residential broadband connection cannot handle the bandwidth required to serve more than let's say ... 5 people simultaneously. This isn't a problem if you're only planning to host the odd page for friends and family, but considering you've bought a domain name, that doesn't sound like the case.
Secondly, it could be in breach of your ISPs terms of service.
To answer your question, any machine can "handle" serving files to the web, it's just that slow ones do it slower
People make web servers out of
all sorts of things. My personal (biased) recommendation would be to put a light linux distribution on the machine and start playing!
One thing I've always wanted to do is redirect subdomains of my domain to specific machines in my house, like the xbox. Of course, I'd need to check that it was up before I actually redirected someone, but I figure it'd still be cool.
