My music equipment arsenal is finally percussified!! I picked up the Roland TD-12 vdrums kit and all I have to say is SICK! Watch the first two NAMM Booth video demos to get an idea of how insane these things are... (COSM = omfg)

Whew, wish i had those, look perfect. The only elctronic drums im used to are those horrible flat pad ones that make you feel like your hitting a wall. Those look like they provide the kind of feel acoustic provides.

My drummer was checking those out last week, and yeah, they're a much better feel than hitting those stupid flat pad ones. But they're still bouncey, which makes you look like you can drum faster than you could on an acoustic set (even I became a speed demon, and I've only dabbled in drums). But those are really cool for a programmable soundscape type feel, and, if you couple them with an acoustic set, you become unstoppable.

So... Am I right in assuming that the physical instruments there don't give off any sound at all?

It is entirely digitally generated based on how hard/where you hit it?

I don't have a single musical streak in me, so you'll have to forgive me if I'm way off the mark.

Well, the actual drums themselves do make noise, but tinny crappy sheep skin rug noise. They have a load of velocity sensors etc. that figure out what you're doing then output the digital representation, which is where the real sound is.

I'm half and half on digital drums. I think they're awesome because they're 1000 times more varied than accoustic drums - especially that set. It's pretty amazing all the stuff you can do. As a percussionist the world is your oyster and you can play so many different rhythms for different styles. But having said that, there's nothing like a real set of drums.

I still think it's cool kit.

I looked at the first version a few years ago. They seem ok for me, but I want my Roland keyboard first.

Yes I agree, I would never have touched electronic drums with a 10 foot stick having been an acoustic drummer since I was like 13. The technology has finally caught up with this tho. Take it from me, its like playing an acoustic set, really and truly. The drum heads (Roland V-Drum Mesh Heads by REMO) are actually drum skins - with tightening lugs and all) but they make no acoustic sound other than the stick hitting the skin. Everything in the kit is velocity sensitive, from the lightest tap (or even brushes) to an all out booming assault. I had been eyeing these since last year and was blown away when I watched the video demos, and messed with them for real at Guitar Center. The thing thats unbeatable from all perspectives is the concept of "Virtual Hardware" via COSM. Yesterday I was playing and one of the stock preset kits was pretty good but I didn't like certain things so all I had to do was select that particular item (snare say) and go in and edit its properties like shell diameter and depth, body material, skin type, damping... the list goes on and on. Then I altered crash 2 to a 16" heavy crash because it was set as a China on this particular kit. Exit the menu, done. New kit that easy. Jammed along with a bunch of cd's til my arms fell off

If youre skeptical id really suggest you check out the demos linked in the fist post. The one thing they don't show is how good these drums are for the rock-alternative-metalesque genres. When I have time I will line out to my pc and record some short bits with some rock elements so you can get an idea of what these fookers sound like for heavier musical styles.

Fallout - Yeah, that was what I was getting at.

Looks like a nice set up, then
I wouldn't mind having a bash, but as I said, I'm about as musically talented as a small shrub in a hurricane... So I think I'll leave it to the pro's.

he's beyond a "natural" at drumming, bordering on a prodigy.
if he's 12 in that video then I wonder at what age he started playing drums. the skill level needed to play some of those techniques usually takes years to acquire. also he has a great mix of natural speed, especially in his feet, and the stamina of youth.
wicked.

Matto, thanks. no I had been looking at them for a while but was holding off until I sorted my 05 taxes and 06 stuff to date, to see where I was at money-wise (my accountant is a god). Anyway I was fortunate enough to have saved quite a chunk of change from July 05 until now (consultant software development is pretty lucrative imho) so I decided to go a bit crazy My wife came with me to GCenter, she was all for me having this "new toy" so long as all the rest of my left over dosh ends up in our savings account...."yes dear"

need to hit radio shack today to get a longer wire so I can line out the drums to my pc, and I ordered SONAR 4 Home Studio XL for track recording (cakewalk 9 pro audio got a little "dated")

And to think, on friday (when I got the drums) all I had intended to do was go get 2 sets of Bass Strings for my bass, lol

both reasons I took the plunge and you can mix in an external audio source (like a cd player) and play along with your cd's all under head phones. also you can send out midi and L/R stereo simultaneously if you like.

Hey, Mr Rustler, would you ever be interesting in doing some live drumming for one of my tracks? Some sort of co-op action? Is it possible to use that funky device on your drum kit to quantize notes so they're perfectly in time? That's definitely not necessary, but I would be curious.

Could be fun.

Ok, you're added matey, but be warned, my MSN is rubbish. I think it might be a hardware problem as I have issues with network games too. As others will testify, I often respond and it doesnt get through (normally happens when I leave it idle for a few minutes), so if you think I'm ignoring you, I've probably responded and it's failed to get through. Hit me back with a random msg and then I can normally send it through again.

Rubbish, yes. I keep updating MSN and have the same problem. Maybe it'll be sorted when I next reinstall windows.

ok.
sounds like a nic card issue. maybe check the duplex settings, like if its set to half, set it to full. Ive seen some weird crap with older nic cards (including built on ones)

would irc be better, connectivity-wise?

MSN is still the best bet as it's all I use! I just log out and log back on if it all goes wrong.

As for the NIC card issue, I have a pretty decent gigabyte SLI mobo with 2 GB/s NICs on it. Both have the same issue. But other messengers and most games work fine. Flashpoint and Vietcong and MSN are the 3 problem areas. One day I will have to pull my finger out to suss out the problem though.

blah! You guys wouldnt happen to know who tony royster sr. is? Hes one of the most famour jazz musicians ever.

Hes played with tony williams (thus the solo is deticated to him) who revolutionized the drumming world.

My favorite drummer is a disciple of tony williams, as everyone should be. look him up, his name is john blackwell.

That kid is sure good, but most of the rrhythyms could be applied with some genetic appendage seperation. Do i believe hes very good to the point of being a child prodigy? hell yea

Do i believe there are better dummers, hell yea

he will aspire to be the best once he is older. I can garuntee it.

Fallout, me and my friend do live drum and bass stuff in my basement when im working on articulation of the wrists... i guess you would call it.

Add me on MSN and we can talk DnB some time, weve got a helluva industry here in atlanta. My friend and I are thinking about taking a trip to london because of the drum n bass scene there. Id like to know of some good places

Can't wait to hear the tunes that you guys come up with. I love the way that the drum combines songs to drum beats. Sounds like a new type of music. There will probably be a name for it soon.

Ive been on both sides of the fence in my life (near destitute, vs. doing well and saving money) so I decided to enjoy the moment and make an investment in my music again. Had that amount been everything I had saved I wouldnt have bought it. But since it was less than half I decided to buy and put the rest of the dosh in the family savings. Not to mention we were able to put it on a gc card 12 months no interest, so I felt a little better about that

CattleRustler,

That's pretty much the model i've been tossing up between for a while. I have a question about the rack Can the bass drum trigger be clamped to it ? It appears to be the same as the td6/td8, which I found it tended to slide around

dude, cattle rustler get a double bass pedal.

Iron cobra is good for any genre, and if you want some flyin bass tunes you will probably need it.

Kevin,

The kick pad is free standing and cant clamp to the frame, but it is very stable. It has an L-shaped metal frame with rubber feet, the trigger itself is mounted to the upright part of the L, and your pedal or double-bass pedal clamps onto to the part of the L that is paralell with the floor. Behind the trigger you insert a cylindrical piece where two adjustable angled legs stick out like on a 45 degree angle down and behind the L sort of like this if you were looking from the side /L
The angled legs have rubber feet with a standard retractable spike like other standard drum items (pedals, bass drum feet, hihat stands, etc) so depending on the surface you can really prevent it from sliding around. In my set up I have the spikes retracted, just using the rubber feet, but this is on a carpet that I dont want to tear up with spikes. So far it hasnt moved on me. I have had more trouble with real bass drums sliding away over the years. Its really actually pretty nifty even without the ability to clamp to the frame, and actually its a good thing since when I get my db pedal I may have to offset the bass trigger to the right so I can fit in next to the hihats without having to open the left side of the frame any more and/or move the hihats so far to the left.

@mega-dumb
thanks

@odd
yeah that was one I was looking at, or a dw9000
