my writer's stopped working, it opens and closes, the light flashes a bit, but then it doesn't bother doing anything else, no reading, no nothing.

has anyone got any ideas on what i can do with it? i haven't tried reinstalling drivers, but i'm not convinced it will actually help.

Cheers

Check cable going from it to motherboard, sounds like it's fallen out.

Is it only DVD's it won't read. What about CD's?

They have a life limit. Look at PS1, and all of the CD Roms that I have broken. It is probably dead.

I'd hate to go off topic, but Indi, I love that avatar. Especially when that dog-like creature was going back and forth.

EDIT: I meant Avatar, not signature.

That reminds me, I never did throw my old gfx card at the first chav to annoy me

I could say look at all the hardware, but, unless you know what you're doing then it won't help, hope it should have to resort to this, I had the same problem with a CD drive on my old PC, we couldn't fix it, the PC got a terrible virus, so we had to re format, and then the CD drive worked.

Yey! I removed the sig...

make one of those machines where balls move and they activate some other fancy thing that leads to another cool thing, and eventually it leads to the dvd burner being flung out the window, oh and make sure you record it .

If it was working ok before, why would it suddenly need firmware?

the rom might have corrupted.
the discs hes using might not be compatible with the older rom.
the newer rom might repair a mistake in code that ruins the burning process after a period of time.
the driver code might have bugs or not completed at product release time.

there are so many variables, it might not be the firmware, however owning a multitude of cdrom / dvd writers at least 7 CDRW & DVD-+RW in my studio now, it wouldnt hurt to upgrade it and see.

does that help answer your question jerbsy ?

The PS1 CD drive was cheaply made rubbish and lasted less than 6 months.

I still have 3 ps1's and they all still work, perhaps its your due care that shortens the life.

Thats what I think, I've got about 5 ps1s under my bed right now, and I'm sure at least 4 of them work perfectly, the 5th I've tested but never played more than an hour. In fact, the only system I had that was buggy (which could still read CDs and DVDs, just took about 5 tries till it recognized) is my first PS2, which I bought a new one and have had not a single problem with. Heck, all my old NES systems still work tip-top as well, especially the top loaders.

Everything I buy that contains a laser seems to have a limited life expectancy. I look after things really well. However I use my hardware day, and night, being as I hardly ever sleep.

dreamcast had a buggy cd drive because of the abnormal way that it read CDs, allowing you to fit 1024mb on it. both mine broke, the disc drive just makes weird noises and when you open it the disc is really REALLY hot.
