Just gonna throw this idea into the loop really quickly. My partner in crime at Breakbeat Terrorism (Scienide) has been putting together a site called UGMF.net for the last month or so. Underground Music Federation. It's basically gonna be a community music/audio site with an emphasis on bringing all aspects of audio together into one place. So we'll get producers, lyricists, singers, MCs, DJs, sound engineers all in together to exchange files, colaborate and basically meet up to do the music and sound biz.

This also involves game audio, and I'm gonna be taking on that task. So there's a section there for game developers to discuss game audio, from sound effects, to musical scores to voice acting. You can also showcase your work. For the developer, the idea is to provide access to voice actors, musicians, sound engineers etc. etc. I'm already putting together some sample packs for download, and there should be some good content by the time the doors open.

I'm just dropping this post to guage who'd be interested in this concept, and whether you have any suggestions we can consider. You're obviously perfectly welcome there from the music angle as well. If you're not in need of audio for your game, but you're a cattlerustler and you play the drums, or you're a hawkeye and you write music, or you're a DJ or whatever, there'll be a place there for you too.

Any suggestions ideas thoughts comments or questions, let me know! If you go to the site, you'll find it closed for construction at the moment. We're aiming to get it open in the next month or two.

awesome idea, I hope to be able to contribute some stuff.

Quote: "...you're a cattlerustler and you play the drums..."

just so all options remain open and people are aware (if they need something, etc - not as bragging) I also play rythm guitar, some lead guitar, phat-ass bass guitar, and some keys. I have each of these instruments, tons of effects, and have the ability to record tracks, mixes, etc. I'd love to get more involved in music again, this seems like a good place to start!

Will it be free? I'd be interested in posting some of my original loops.

Thanks for your interests guys. Yes, it will be free. I think Scienide is playing with the idea of providing some pay services later down the line when the site is established. Things along the lines of music hosting/promotion packages, as well as maybe maybe vinyl cutting services. Just ideas at the moment. There will also be a store to buy things like sample CDs as we have contacts with LoopMasters. BUT there will never be a need to pay anything, nor will there be any really cool features that you're gagging to use but you have to pay to use. There might just be a few services that cost casheesh in the future.

So far we have a few cool things like a flash chat forum for live chat via some funky plugin, and we're working on a submission system to you can submit tracks, games etc. Lots to do still.

@CowStealer

Should be a perfect site for you then mate! That sort of broad musical versatility and being into game dev would make most of the sections interesting to you.

@Jeku

That'd be awesome mate. We'd obviously like to get content on there as quickly as possible to fill up the site, so any audio loops and things you can provide would be spot on.

@Hawkeye

Obviously your choonage would have to go on the site.

Submissions, I dont believe, will be hosted. So anything submitted would be via a link, but the site has 3GB of space, so we'll definitely host things on a case by case basis. So if someone is a regular contributor of X then of course we'll be happy to host their stuff, give them article writing priveledges and all that stuff. Still working it all out!

Cheers for your interest chaps.

I like the concept, pretty cool.
Something I've been wondering is, do you or your mate know much about Sound Effect creation or do you just do music?

Cause atm I'm looking for someone to do some sound engineering. I already have a musician for the project (quite well known one, and cute one at that) but could really do with someone who knows how to make sound effects.

Sounds really awesome. I know that I'll need some serious audio material for my new big project. Music, sound effects, and possibly voiceovers. A good website where I can browse around and post would be a great place for me to start.

@Xander

Perfect. Hopefully it should turn out to be exactly the place you need. Obviously it'll take some time to build up a big user base and it'll also take some work to keep that user base, but hopefully within a few months of opening we should have a decent group of people. From there, let the colabs begin! I mean, personally, I'm up for voice acting, sound engineering, writing music ... ya know, the whole lot. That's why I'm really keen on the project.

@Raven

I do both. Scienide is just music, although he'd know a bit about it from writing digital music. But I don't do much sound effect creation. I personally don't think there's much of a demand for it when most of the sound you need exist in the real world. It's better to get out there and record them, so I have a portable pre-amped digital recorder and a high quality stereo SP mic. Once you've got the sounds, then the digital music skills come into effect, because you already know about EQing, compression, reverb etc. to bring the sounds to life and touch them up.

Having said that, sci-fi type sounds can be synthesised, and obviously sounds can be mixed and modulated to create new sounds. So I do consider myself an amateur sound effect engineer, but I wouldnt go as far as to say creator.

Sci-fi sounds are something I'm interested in.. as it's of a sci-fi theme project.

I'm sure you still have my msn, I wouldn't mind talking to you about the project see if you're interested. Not sure what you charge though, would be interested to know that.
Right now Titan (not sure if you remember him from RGT) but he's helping me out with payment systems for people.

At the moment I have a load of projects on the go that I'm trying to juggle, so it'd have to be something special! Besides, you couldn't afford me Raven!

As I said, you'd just have to hear what I had to say; then decide.
But if you're swamped no biggie, if you know of anyone else who can do it then that'd help. I have no contacts in that sort of area, so could really do with one (and it's a bit of a rush to get someone)

Sifi sounds? Like what, ambience/machinery/bleepsnbloops/general F.E.A.R. style background noises? Or are you also aiming for weapon noises and whatnot?

Sounds like an awesome idea Fallout. I have to agree that a good music community with a section for gaming is extremely hard to find these days. I'll be sure to sign up and drop in some sound effects and tunes.

not entirely sure myself, it's not something i generally think about; just know that as the project manager, i've got to sort out getting someone who knows.

i mean it'll be quite a few basic things, for the moment i'm just ripping sounds from other games and free libraries.
but will need someone to do some commerical stuff for it cause we won't be able to use these sounds we have forever.

Sounds like a great site. I need to showcase my music somewhere other than my personal website, which is...err...a pigsty of a forum full of raving lunatics. It would also be cool to be able to find people who need music for games easily.

As of right now my jeku.com page is pretty minimalist--- with just a list and MP3 player for some of the better songs I've written. It would be nice to be in a community of like-minded artists--- maybe I'll finally meet someone else who writes my style of music

@Jeku

I never said we could work miracles.

Nah hopefully it will turn into that sorta hub where we can all find what we want from the music community. I mean, I'll personally be looking for projects to write music for/make sounds for, from games, to films (there is a film section to), plus find vocalists for my music and maybe do vocals for other peeps etc. So me and Sci are both doing this from a drive to get stuff out of it too. So I can relate to those feelings you guys have got for promotion of music and community and making the most out of what you make.

I have no doubt it'll have teething problems though. So when we do get the doors open, if it doesnt seem to be working on some level, make sure you tell us, rather than buggering off. We basically want to make it attractive for the majority of people, so that we can keep em there and keep the community there. The more peeps we have, the more artists, the more consumers, the more chance of hooking up with someone to colab with, write music for, or get music from for your projects.

Yeah, but the thing about this is, we all KNOW that you chaps aren't newbies trying to make a name for themselves without actually putting in any effort. Just out of respect for you two, I'm gonna stick with this project and not bail out at the first sign of possible trouble. Hopefuly, everybody else will feel the same way

hell yea!

I guess i could mix up a few tracks for some games. Ive got some trip hop stuff collecting dust on my desktop.

Fallout what do you think a community such as this would like better genre wise? DnB, trance, house ect...

Ive got a big vinyl collection and I could make the tracks rather short and loopable.

I also have a father that is a music composition teacher, so orchestral is also available.

Aside from that I play drums and have recording equipment, and very skilled guitarist.

My dad can improvise if i kick him in the leg and tell him "RAGTIME!" he can record something in one take and make it a loop.

What would you guys prefer?

Thanks Hawkster. That's the sort of attitude we need basically.

@Oddmind, it's totally up to you and the audience. That'll be the idea. You provide what you want to provide, or you ask what people want and try and provide it. Whatever floats your boat. I, for example, might be after orchestral music producers for my games, cos I'm not quite up on that. I'd also be after vocalists for my music and voice actors for my games. On the flip side, I'd provide voice acting, sound effects and music for games, plus provide wannabie vocalists with colab opportunities to get their voice on a track.

You might have totally different motives. My housemate, for example, is a house DJ. He'll be on there to promote his mixes and chat to people about records. As will my mate Scam, who's now on Ray Keiths label, so he'll be keen to promote his music and talk drum'n'bass, while throwing up his mix sets and showing off his scratching. Some of the peeps on here also do amateur films, so hopefully they'll get on the site and try and hook up with musicians to write scores for their films, or people to do sound effects for them.

That's my vision of it anyway. It'll all revolve around a forum and chat room, with a website present aswell with some submission features and download sections. The idea will be you get what you want from it by colaborating with other people and asking for the audio you need, or providing what someone else needs.

How about online workshops? I am going to hold a "real-life" workshop on recording/mixing/mastering techniques this summer and plan to convert it to an online one.

Yeah, if it's one thing that I suck at, it's mastering.

My last piece I couldn't get the compressor to avoid choking on one huge transition, so I bypassed it for a couple of bars around. Made an audible clicky noise when I turned it off, too

I actually want to make a Horizontal scroller that has all the animations timed to music. If anyone has a long peice of music, please let me know. I am aiming for an 'Amiga Delta' feel. The music would have changing moods that I could sew together seamlessly if possible. Maybe even overlap the different instraments on different tracks. Delta did that whilst it loaded.

Articles on mastering etc. are precisely the sort of contents we'd be after. Keep a look out for when the site is online. I'll do some shameless advertising on here when it finally goes live and then anything like that you have would be perfect for the site. We can then discuss how to incorporate it.

I'm sure I can come up with some tutorial shizzle for ya as well The more I hear about this project the more I'm starting to get into it... sort of a melting pot for everything music/game related. This will be something different as well, because of programming backgrounds and whatnot, a different perspective on things if you will.

Hi There,

First of all, I hope you dontmind me dropping to make this post. Apologies if i'm being a tad intrusive but I just wanted to thank you guys.

Your responses in this thread have been a real boost to me. Fallout showed me the thread and I had to reply.

Basically, I just wanted to say that with members like you we could really push this new site and build a great community spirit. As Fallout has2 mentioned, there will be teething problems, but we will work through them and hopefully end up with a very slick site.

Your content will be highly valued ina ny form, be it gaming, music, video or photography. We cover hope to encompass a lot of media styles all revolving around music.

So thats it really, just wanted to say thanks for the support and i look forward to seeing you on the new site.

Cheers,

Yea this sounds great guys. I will definately contribute and have people from the scene down here in atlanta that would for sure contribute. I recon we can have a gig of files to download after a month, plus many services people will be offerring.

in game development terms audio is so often looked over I will do anything to help get a specialized community up and running.

definately post updates and tell us how its going, I want to know when I will be able to overload you with tracks and talk to other people about the stuff I enjoy cant wait!
