My notebook was getting low on memory so I decided to do a little
"spring cleaning".

I cleaned up a little over 50 gigs, but messed some things up in the process. It may have been from me screwing with the Windows directory. I emptyed the Temp and Prefetch folders as well as some Temporary Internet folders. Also got rid of a few spyware/anti-virus programs(had like 5 of em, lol). Also got rid of my custom desktop and themes, icons(probably what screwed things up), and cursors. Also raised my performance settings and stuff.

The problem is that somewhere along the way all of my icons got cleared and now there all blank, even the DBPro stuff. Like if I make a executable with DB it will still have a blank icon. Basically everything now has a blank icon. I was able to restore some icons, but only for shortcuts for some odd reason. Also when I go to My Computer, then click on my hard drive it brings up a search instead, freaking weird man. Also if I right click on the drive it says Search in bold, then underneath says open.

So if anybody actually understands what I've just rambled on about and knows a SIMPLE(no reinstall/restore) way to fix the problems I mentioned, let me know. I believe that the icons are still on my computer, but I somehow need restore them, maybe their is a broken like somewhere. And if anybody know how to fix the Search thing, let me know.

Thanks in advance

Go to Start : Settings : Control Panel : Folder Options : File Types. You should see all your file extentions and whatnot in a list there, along with icons for them. If you don't see the icon (for example, .dbpro and .dba are blank), click the Advanced button, and put in the location of the icon you wish to use. That's the only way I know how to replace the icons without getting a theme or re-installing.

if you cant get it back in order a winxp repair install actually works. I had to do this at work and it actually worked without losing anything. I did back everything up first tho, just in case.

next solution is the TCA Special: Format HD, Reinstall everything.

Although it would be best to get a new hard drive and then reinstall.

I attached a pic to this post that shows my desktop and some other stuff. If you look to left you'll see Firefox, but there's no icon. The thing is I just now installed that. And if you look at the other stuff I pulled up you can see that the icons are actually there, but not showing. Theres got to be a broken link somewhere.

For the reinstall, It won't let me. When I put the XP Pro disk in, it says it can't find some file, but the thing is its saying its supposed to be on my dvd drive, when its really supposed to be on my hard drive.

But I think I can do a New Installation, haven't dare try it yet though. If I do a New Installation will it erase my old files, like DB and all my games, and stuff like that? Or is it just gonna overwrite the Windows files? If its just the Windows files then that would be ok.

Any thoughts on that?

Just reinstall the software, not windows.

Well I don't have an actual installation disk or whatever for half of the stuff on my computer. And reinstalling the software still doesn't bring back the icons. Thats the reason why I think its a broken link somewhere, like its searching for the icons in places other than where their actual at. Any info on my previous post?
