Using a LAN cable attatched to our internet router, i am unable to post messages on forums, or click on a lot of buttons on my email- i think i am unable to "submit forms". However, i can do it fine using internet explorer. It would also appear that firefox works fine using my old modem (ie not through the router). Anyone have any idea how to fix this? I've tried to look into it, but get a load of indeciperhable gubbins filled with acronyms that i don't know.

What the hell?

Okay, you are directly connecting to the Modem? Probally just need an aditional network protocol.

I think i'm sorted for viruses. I don't really know how it all works. With the router and firefox, i can view webpages and download things fine, but don't seem to be able to post stuff.

Try to delete IE5 in temporary internet files. IE5 can store a simple jpg that has broken from this site, and it will repeatedly try to use the broken file causing slowdown, and problems like crashes, and not being able to post. You will find it hard to see the IE5 files because they are hidden. Even if you allow XP to see hidden files IE5 is still hidden. You need an eraser program to get rid of it.

No it didn't. I'll elaborate if this works..

OK i posted that with IE. Here is what i tried to post after posting the test using "edit"...

I just tried. Deleted IE Temporary internet files and Firefox cache. Problem persists.

IE works ok with router (using it now- except this is the 2nd time i typed this out, 1st one couldn't find server?!) but firefox doesn't. Not just this site- any forum. Also, buttons on email that don't work are apparently of the "submit form" variety.

(i remembered to cut and paste my message that time).
So, i could submit a short message, then i couldn't for some reason. Incedentally, i am posting this via my old modem, which works lovely.

so you can surf the web on firefox? this would suggest the port 80 http is ok,
if not do you have any proxy installed.? change that in firefox options if so.
do you still have the reinstaller for firefox.? try reinstalling it.
you say your email buttons dont work?, are you using thunderbird or something.?
perhaps some buttons are javascript activated, is javascript on.?

Um, i'm not very l33t with computars. I'll answer as best i can.
I can surf the web fine and download files or whatever- it would seem like i can recieve stuff, but not send it, although i must be sending out _some_information, for them to know what to send me.

I wikied proxy- i guess this means the address of my ISP? I know the router knows it- and when i'm using my usb modem, the prog that dials it up knows it. I guess the Browser needs to know whether to send stuff via the USB external modem, or across the LAN- maybe the settings need to be different then. I went to tools->options->general->connection settings and it's set to "auto detect proxy settings for this network"

I'm using a university e-mail account. Not sure what the prog is. I think i tried yahoo mail and that didn't work either.
Javascript- i don't know- but the "javascript console" contained a load of errors. I doubt the problem is that, since at the mo it's working fine (i'm using firefox), but only with the old modem.
I ought to read the gubbins that came with the router again- it seems the other computer using it works fine (so i'm told), so maybe i installed stuff for it wrong.

I think maybe i just plugged straight in with the LAN cable without installing anything as the second computer, and didn't install anything as far as i remember... I have "LAN" in my list of connections in the control panel- but no letters and numbers saying what model it is like on the other comp.
