well unfortunately you can only use wav files using pcm compression.
now you CAN use 46khz STEREO wave files and play some very nice music at like 8MB per minute. looping is simple as you can just use the loopsound= command. and YES IT WILL KEEP PLAYING. it will get quieter if you go far away.
the soundinzone.fpi script is very simple. if you are in zone it will play sound= yourfile and then go into state 1 with no exit. that makes it a one shot trigger of your sound file.
i added a line
:state=1,plrdistfurther=150:state=0
it resets the trigger.

btw, if you plan on using some spoken voice zones, use 8bit 16khz MONO pcm wav files. way smaller than standard and they sound just fine for voice recordings.

if it is a zone, use zone command plrwithinzone=0/1

but to deal with music... personally, have a skull follow you that is activated by zones you step though... issue is that I think there is no 'stop' for loopsound, and timer is only good for one script.

::followplr
:activated=1:3dsound=path
:activated=2:3dsound=path

One way to get music on an entire level is to place a sound zone near where you start your player (althought I think anyplace on the level could be used). In the AI for the sound zone place the "repeatsound.fpi" in the main script and place your music (in a proper format) in the sound0 area. The music will loop and tghe sound level is the same throughout the entire level. I think the repeatsound fpi comes with the program. However if not here is the script.
Just place it in your script bank.
