Hi guys (et gals), just wondering how many of you here actually *have* the .NET framework.

See, Mikey & I do a lot of .NET programming (he C#, me vb.net), and we need a decent winsockish TCP/IP plugin that can act as a server, and allow multitudes of people to connect.

So we're making our own (or are considering it).

He says that most people have the .NET framework now 'or they should do', but I say nein. So I ask you this:

------

What versions (if any) of the .NET framework do you have on your computer(s)? Would you download & install it if a random game asked you to?
Do you think your average PC gamer would have the .NET framework installed on their Windoze?

And, for the sake of it... (OFF-TOPIC)
Linux users: Would you install Mono if it was a dependency of some random app/game that looked interesting?

-----------------

[edit]I have version 2.0 on my 'gaming' PC, versions 1.1 and 2.0 *and* Mono on my server & junk laptop, and none at all on my P3 500mhz Windoze 2000 pc.
Oh yeah, and my Gentoo Linux on gaming PC doesn't "have it" (Mono), but I'm getting round to it, honest!! [/edit]

Yes, I've got 2.0 & 1.1 installed.

Dont use them mind, but unforunately the ATI graphics driver requires 1.1

I have both myself, and always recommend to others to get it should they not.

Main tower: both versions, laptop: 2.0, other 3 computers: no

Quote: "Would you download & install it if a random game asked you to?"

depends on how great I think the game is.

Quote: "Do you think your average PC gamer would have the .NET framework installed on their Windoze?"

I would guess "no".

[edit]
I would just like to add that I despise .NET and only have it installed b/c it is required by several programs that I use.

I think I've got 1.1 and 2.0. I'd consider it part of the windiz installation now, so I'd be fine downloading it. (hugs broadband)

Oddly enough, no. I've never looked into it but you can bet your ass it ain't as simple as the windows installer for .NET. And yes, I consider "yum install mono.i386" to be too much hassle.

both, everywhere.

if youre making a server for lots of people to connect and do stuff then tcp/ip is fine, if youre making a server for lots of people to connect and do a bunch of stuff in real-time, like an FPS Shoot em up then forget tcp/ip and the whole server bit, you'll need UDP. Most of todays games for multiplayer use a combo of both tcp and udp but its peered udp thats doing the fast data comms. Just my two cents having much experience with tcp/ip Servers and client applications.

good luck tho

It s[/u]ux, computer slows down, and even dont work.

I have 9800pro and at CCC catalyst XXXXXXX CCC does not start any way

So i hate this .NET, 1.1 s[u]

.Net 2.0 and 1.1...you could, if offering a .net app, make it
very clear it may need the framework download, and let the user
decide to proceed or not. Takes some pressure off the developer.

Pretty sure I have both 1.1 and 2.0 as well.

Sort of reminds when every VB app used to have to let ppl know they needed the VB runtime libs.

What versions (if any) of the .NET framework do you have on your computer(s)?
.net 2.0 (in order to run c++ express)
.net 1.1 (just to have the whole series of .net)

Would you download & install it if a random game asked you to?
dont think so.

Do you think your average PC gamer would have the .NET framework installed on their Windoze?
not a gamer. but an application user might. or a game developer who uses a .net based IDE.

my forum - now partly finished

I've got .net 1.1 and 2 installed here. Unless the game/program was really good, I don't think that I could be bothered to download and install .net.

Quote: "Do you think your average PC gamer would have the .NET framework installed on their Windoze?"

No. From what I've observed, the only people you can pretty well guarantee have .net installed are developers. Every one else doesn't bother about it (most average computer users have no idea what it is and couldn't care less) unless some program they want requires it. Then they curse Microsoft and the developer about requiring them to download 20-something mb of runtime files and going through the install process. Believe it or not, for a lot of "average" computer users find this is a rather difficult process (these are the people who have to call their computer literate friends/relatives to be walked through burning a CD-R and if the computer shows a dialog box, they hide under their desk for fear their PC will blow up. Unfortunately I know a few people like this. )

My opinion is that .net is fine for server stuff (asp.net), and it's not too bad for inhouse development. But it isn't that great of a choice for standalone Windows apps that you're going to try to distribute to a large audience. I believe the main reason for this is that it doesn't offer anything for the end user except added frustration and slower GUI performance. Now if it provided a totally new/different/better user interface like Windows did over DOS -- and this isn't just some glass appearance with Vista -- then it would be a different story and users would want their apps to be .net.

When I download a program, I expect the download to simply work without worrying about whether or not I've installed .net 1.1, or .net 2 or some Java runtime or the VB runtime files....

It comes with SP2 now matey (at least 1.0/1.1 - you can dev in compatibility mode with visual studio 2003, not sure about 2005), and it's a crucial update. With the amount of security holes in Windows, you'd be stupid not to install these

Arrr. So it's ok to inflict .NET on developers (relatively ok, sheesh) but not final users...

You agree, or am I just stirring up the hornet's nest here?
