Hi

Just announcing my new website I've set up:

http://www.darkbasicgames.com

Basically a showcase of DBC/P games! If you have any suggestions for games I should include, please let me know here or via the page on the site. And please add reviews and rate games! I want the site to grow much larger than it currently is, and I think it has that potential. Maybe when newcomers want to see what DB is capable of, they can just check out the site....I know there's a showcase on this site, but it doesn't seem to be updated so often

Anyway, please visit it and let me know what you think of the concept/design etc.

Thanks!

Robin

Hey Robin, cool idea for a site! Since the showcase here is kind of dead, there is a real need for something like this.

I've sent you a thing through your submit a game thing. (No prizes for guessing what I submitted)

Good luck with this! Bump also.

Tarnation. And there I was with a similar idea, oh well, serves me right for farting about.

Here's hoping you can keep it up to date, there's been other review sites in the past that just seemed to fizzle out.

yeah I'll definitely be keeping this up to date...I think there's also a lot of scope to expand the site to include more than just games in the future. Glad I got the domain too - according to the way back machine it was registered between 2002 and 2005 by "John Dougher"....interesting

Got your submission Drew, just downloading the game now

Can we submit older DBP games? I have a few early ones I've done that barely anyone has played.

Thanks Flindiana, great review - will add it shortly! [Edit: Just added it!]
Yeah sure you can submit older games - so long as they are 'complete' and made in db, I'll add them in

Great idea and a site done great!

All the games are suberb, so Im also thinking of more ordinary games. To get people to notice this and/or get more games, I suggest sticky or huge search for DB(P) games at PA board and showcase .

Some ideas:
maybe voting system where you can just hit some star rating without writing a complete review, that should get more votes.
I dont think it's needed now, but when it gets popular, some sorting method like sort A-B, rating, downloads, views etc.

Yeah definitely A star rating is a very good idea, and once I add more and more games I'm going to have to change the directory around and site structure to accomodate them all. Am working my way slowly through the showcase, forum and past newsletters etc. adding games, and at the moment I'm managing to add about one game per day. Slowly but surely....

Thanks for the comments!

Robin

Edit - Drew your game is up now - it's in the directory - haven't updated the home page with the latest games yet.
Also thanks Xander - that's really helpful including a review with your submission - Saves a lot of time.

I submitted my game...

Sounds like a cool idea, I like it. I have also noticed that the showcase here is not updated as often as it could be. Hopefully your site continues to grow and show off what DB/DBP is capable of! And it's always good for people to get more exposure for their games too

I think this is a great idea, and I love how the website is simple, to give focus on the games. The only - i have about it is that the review box is so small, it makes it hard to proofread what you say. I'm in the midst of writing a review, and it's really hard to see what I'm doing when you have 4 words on 4 lines showing at a time. Other than that though, I believe this will greatly help to promote many games made in DarkBASIC, even the small little projects which hardly get enough love right now. Great work

This is a great idea, and I'm glad you thought of it. Sumbited a game (BlockVerse), and now I'll go and write a review, I think.

Edit: Alright, I made a bunch of reviews.
But you definitely need to make a puzzle game catagory.

Thanks.

Have just updated it with all the reviews and also BlockVerse. Thanks to all those who wrote reviews! Added puzzle and strategy categories to the directory too.

Atm. I'm looking to keep this website for 'finished'/'complete' games - by that I mean games with menus, sounds, nice graphics and games that are relatively bug free. Shareware or freeware. Check out the games currently in the directory and you can get a feel for the sorts of games I'm adding

hehe. I submitted my only fully completed game - Big Fat Ice Football. It's very simple and it'll be tough to review cos its 2 player only, but hopefully it will inspire some of you to make friends with real people from the real world, as you'll need one to play it.

Thanks Flindiana - those reviews are great. All are online now.

With regard to the types of games I would put on the site...well, I want to keep it as a 'showcase of the best dark basic games', not as a database of every single DB game ever made. I want it to be where people can go to see the quality and variety of games which can be made in DB, maybe even get encouraged to start learning DB too. So yeah, I'm kind of putting non-db'ers as my 'target market'.

Robin

Edit: thanks Fallout - checking it out now

http://zombiehunter.lukasw.com/

that's my current dbc game in progress. i hope to release a demo very soon, and when i do it will be kickass! (no, not really).

but i guess it will be worth a look, i've spent too much of my free time developing this game i kind of "believe" it will be a quality game but after playing it and testing it over and over again, i feel i will never reach the target i'm trying to reach.

some people have tested the newest version allready and said that it was very awesome, but i guess that is up to you to decide though have a look, and sorry for posting about my project when it's still wip

Are you interested in 2d games, like my game 'Splat'. It may look basic but it is a very addictive game and was one of the most played Spectrum games of all time.

http://www.dbhut.com/splat.html

It did win a few prizes in Retro Remakes compo 2004 and also came 17th out of 73 places, so can't be too bad.

Results: http://www.retroremakes.com/comp2004/results.php

Judges Reviews: http://www.retroremakes.com/comp2004/reviews.php?id=44

It still has lots of players. Even today someone has got onto position 1 on internet top 50.

So, feel free to add that to your site, preferbly using 'Spooky' as name, and NOT showing my email address. I get enough spam as it is, and you are not using any fancy javascripts to hide email addresses on your site, which makes it too easy for email harvesters.

Do you have any fancy javascripts to hide the email addresses? If anyone else doesn't want their email address on the site, just let me know by email or something.

Very nice. Looks good. I need to submit some of my games.
Maybe you can add the option to see the top rated games and have the rating underneath the date on the directories page.
Very nice work though

If you look at source code of contact page on my site you will see javascript to generate email address. Basically splits the address into 3 variables and outputs it in bits so that automated email harvesters (and there's a LOT of those), can not decode it.

But I believe email harvesters can still look at the final rendered page, so your javascript code will not hide the email address (unless client-side code doesn't get rendered).

What I would do is something like Slashdot does, and do random changes to the address: i.e.

prefix AT domain DOT com
prefix@domain . com
etc.

Actually, nevermind, I think I'm wrong about the Javascript thing as the harvesters will most likely just see the Javascript code and not the final rendered page.

I have tried a lot of email harvesters as part of my job, and a few paranoid clients I have, and I have yet to find one that can read the rendered webpage. All of them simply crawl your website and analyze the source code looking for telltale email addresses.

Amazing how these harvester programs can get targetted email addrsses aswell. Say you want to send loads of spam to people that have websites about tomatoes, all these automated programs do is get the google results as if you searched for tomato, then go to each website result in turn and crawl around each web as much as it can and collect the addresses. Quite clever really.

i know of 2 great games that aren't in the list or haven't been mentioned in a while. i haven't seen them much lately and last time i played them was in 2003 i think.

if i remember correctly they were namned:

* Strutt your Stuff (fps game by: Danny or something)
* Ghost Racer (racing game by: i think it was TMC actually)

i dont remember who wrote them, but i'm sure they are DBC games.
if anyone know where to find them that would be awesome! i'd love to play them once agian
