As I mentioned in a different thread, I'm thinking of starting a BF42 "clan" open only to TGC members. I know that I play it alot, and Saikoro does... does anyone else? And if we do it, what sort of server should we create? I'd like to be an admin (since I came up with this splendid idea) if someone else would rather host it, and I think we should sort of vote on the rules of the server and whatnot. I'm thinking...

* NO time limit: I hate timed maps... it's not like real-life battles have a 30-minute time limit. I propose we don't use a time limit and let the battles play out to the very end

* Lengthy maps: I personally like games with lots of tickets, but if no one else shares that desire then forget it I just like maps that take a long time to play. Also, I think it's a waste of time to load a map, play it, and then load another... maps with 2-4 runs are always best, particularly 3-round maps, imho

* Rules: Hacks/ cheats/ glitching = boot, second offense = ban, although if we use PB then it won't be as much of a problem. Obviously TKing on purpose would equal a kick/ ban. What other rules could you need?

Then there's the name thing... imo, we shouldn't have any wacky logo... maybe just [TGC]Matt Rock or [TGC]Saikoro or what-have-you.

Last but not least, what are your favorite battlefield maps, including expansion maps? Mine are:
Midway
Battle of the Bulge
Market Garden
Cassino
Husky
Eagle's Nest
Wake
El Alamain
Gazala
Bocage
Liberation of Caan
Omaha Beach
Guadalcanal
Iwo Jima
Battleaxe

I'm sure some people will think that this is just a stupid idea. But I dunno, I think it'd be fun

You know I'm in

I can stand long maps (like them, even), but any map, no matter what it is, becomes fairly boring after 45 minutes. Usually games arent exciting enough to be fun past then, and by then you've defended every post there is and attacked all of them, so then its time for a map switch. Unless, of course, it is a heated game, and seeing as how I've never been in a clan on anything, twould be fun to practice tactics and whatnot. As far as levels, I would play anything and everything, I think that if you're not good at a certain level, you should play it more often though, so the hard levels to play would be great. And if we could get great tactic in there too, we'd own

I think we'll own anyway... I mean, we're all game designers here I like big open maps with lots of air, and planes (I rock dogfights and bombing). There's more room for strategy on bigger maps. I think Bocage, Market Garden, and Lib-Caan might be the most intense strategy maps there are because you have a lot of wide open spaces, but the rivers cut these maps in half. Take Market Garden for example:

There's two bridges: Arnhem (the big westward bridge) and the stone bridge (two the east). The germans start north with all of the armor, and the allies start south with all the planes. Whoever controls those bridges controls the round, because if the allies can stop the axis armor from crossing and they have medics or assault guys running the gauntlet along the shorelines, then there's nothing the germans can do except hide from the aerial bombing onslaught. HOWEVER, if the GERMANS control the bridges, the allies have to tuck-tail and run because even with control of the church, and the two shermans it produces, the Nazi tigers will simply roll right over them. I love tactics and I think we should plan out battles hardcore... we are, afterall, programmers Each teammember would have a dedicated role in the battle. For instance, I might be ordered to patrol a certain area in a Mustang, and Saikoro might be ordered to be an engineer and mine/ expack a bridge to stop vehicles from crossing, and another person might be sitting in an ambush spot in a tank waiting for enemies to make a fatally wrong step. with our expertise in coding and efficiency, it only makes sense that we'd be so precise Then again, maybe that isn't as fun, hehe.

What skills does everyone whose interested have? I'm a good medic... I'm unstoppable with a Tommy and I ALWAYS go out of my way to heal injured friends. I'm also good at sneaking behind enemy lines to capture a flag or take down a spawn that's deep in enemy territory. In terms of vehicles, I'm not the best driver, but I'm good on a ship and I can fly like there's no tomorrow

An added note: I'm trying to start up a BF42 server right now, called:

Binghamton R2RSS All Welcome

If you have Road to Rome AND secret weapons, come on to Battlefield and try to find (and join) my server so I know if it works or not. I'll leave it running all night or until someone tells me it isn't working, whichever happens first

As good as a footsolder I may make, I prefer doing stealth runs with a sniper. One of my main tactics is to flank a hostile enemy while they are fighting the main force. They tend not to notice or expect me, and with a sniper from afar, I can take out a good chunk of the enemy to let the main force in enough to take the point. I also like setting my sights on the enemy flag, unnoticed, and when someone else comes to take their flag, I can provide decent cover for them. But of course, nothing can beat a bit of the ol' push on and press on at the front lines

UGH, I can't host. I set up the port forwarding finally (which was a headache and a half, I should mention), then I downloaded the blackbagops server, installed it, and then I tried setting up my server. Then, I loaded BF42 and added the server, but when I click on the server I made, it refuses to connect... can anyone else host?

If most of us don't have the expansion packs, we don't need to use them... I just thought it'd be a bit cooler The best expansion pack maps anyway are Husky and Eagle's Nest, in my opinion anyway. That's up to everyone else. Higgins, do you have the regular version of the game?

I have all expansion packs, but I've never got multiplayer to work. I had trouble finding the latest patch if I remember correctly, but if someone could help me out I'd be glad to play, I've had loads of fun in one player

If you need the BF42 patch, I'm posting it here. Just click the red download box at the bottom of this post, DL it, then install it If you have the expansion packs, follow Saikoro's link above and scroll to the bottom of the page.

If you're going to join our TGC team, add me to your xfire (if you use it). My xfire S/N is Maximuspt1.

I never go through gamespy to join games. I always go directly through the multiplayer menu in the game. But I think that's prety much the same thing anyway.

Matt: Have you tried Call of Duty 2 for the PC? What do you think of that?

Not saying I don't want to do a BF thing, but CoD2 just has a cleaner multiplayer and easier to manage overall. IMO, however, BF is a different category than CoD2 multiplayer, because BF makes you feel like a part of the army as opposed to CoD making you feel like you're playing military Counter-Strike.

COD2 won't play on my computer for some reason, even though my video card (as well as everything else on my Vaio) meets and/ or beats their recommended specifications. It starts up, the disc sounds like it's reading, and then I get the windows ker-plunk but no error message. I tried contacting tech support and they said "re-install," which I did, and it didn't fix anything. So I uninstalled it and gave it to a friend... and it works fine for him

They released a new patch which I think was supposed to stop that
But oh well, I added you to my XFire, so when you come on, just drop a message and we can get to figuring out what to do about a server.

if you prod mikey or blanky on devhat irc, a server can be setup on a dedicated machine. you can probably get more people intrested in playing if your on irc and some of them own it.

Me too, my xfire is Maximuspt1 if you want to add me.

Stupid question, but does anything think TGC will get mad at us for making a clan named after their company?

Another thing... clans always have websites, but if you've ever visited my website (www.mattrock.cjb.net < have a pop-up blocker ready because CJB sucks), you'll quickly learn why I should NOT make one, lol. And a nifty logo, too... maybe the DB pyramid, lol

I've been struck by a vision, but I don't think it's worth opening a new thread for. Does anyone know anything about making mods for Battlefield 1942? I've been playing "Battlefield PIRATES!" lately and thinking to myself "it would ROCK if we could make a cowboy and western BF42...

Called Battlefield 1872, it would feature maps like Deadwood, Dodge City, Tombstone, Little Bighorn, Death Valley, The Alamo, and several others. If I can get enough support and find enough tutorials on how to do it, we should make one

Another thing, I've been using [TGC] in my name lately... if you play BF42 and encounter [TGC] Matt Rock, that's me

making a bf42 mod isnt hard, just a case of getting the .sm exporter and knowledge of winrfa and howto edit the con files.

however you should be a bf2 or soon to bf b2042 mod :/.

I like BF42 though... it's a better game, imho. The graphics are better in the newer ones, and other than that, there aren't any improvements that I can tell. And BF1942 still has a pretty huge following, even several years and several games after the fact.

True, in fact it's held a much stronger following than most games who see sequels, like the Unreal Tournament series. Too bad the multiplayer setup/interface is horrible x.x
