Please forgive me if this has been asked already but what is the difference between Play Basic and Dark Basic?

I am looking for something that I can use to create RPGs and War Games. Which would be better for this purpose?

Ive never used Play Basic, but I know that it is only made for 2d, while Dark basic use both 2d and 3d.

I've been having problems deciding myself. I'd like to begin doing games that are 3D but in a 2D environment. I'm just jumping into darkbasic right now though, can't hurt to learn something else.

PlayBASIC is for making 2d games, and DarkBASIC is for 2d or 3d games.

It depends on if you want a 2D or 3D RPG/War Game. I would try using DarkBASIC though.

ok, there's couple of misconceptions about what PlayBASIC is here.

The language syntax is similar, in some cases identical. So it's easy to translate DB code PB.

No. PlayBasic can not produce binaries for mobiles/pdas at this time. It is however is an objective, but most likely will not be seriously looked at, until after PBFX..

No, this is not strictly true. While PB was designed and is marketed as a 2D tool, it can also create 3D effects. As PB includes rotation/Mesh and some 3D rendering features already. It's just wasn't designed to be 3D tool from the outset. So achieving 3D in PB (today) requires a little more effort.

There is also plug in 3D engines available of PB. Where you can use a true DBpro style 3D engine in PB today.

darkbasic can do 2D games like mario just fine. If you plan on making 3D games, DB is probably the choice...for now. Who knows what Kevin will roll out with next.
