Some of you may remember that about 6 months back I posted asking for help on why my desktop would not load. After all methods given to me did not work I just accepted it and got used to working with the task manager. Recently however, my computer has stopped spitting out sounds, and yes I have checked to see that the speakers are plugged in. So I go to reinstall Windows because I have everything backed up, yada yada and then I find a tiny little problem. The only Windows disk I have predates SP2. This is a problem because the Windows reinstaller thingy just doesn't let me reinstall it. So I uninstall SP2, nothing, then I try and boot from the disk, and in true Windows fashion, it doesn't work. All that happens is Windows boots up as normal. So I was wondering if there is a way for me to just completely wipe the hard drive and install Windows all over again, install the hours of updates, and all that. Please give very detailed instructions.

P.S. Wow I have not posted here in a long time.

Hmm I had the exact problem about 6 months a go and did work through Taskmanager, it was incredibly annoying, so I backed up what I needed to back up and reformatted the HD, but before doing that, I did something else, its not a solution, but can make life easier, when in task manager, go into processes, end the process called 'explorer.exe' (If you didn't know, thats basically the desktop, task bar etc. what my problem was that something made it crash on start up each time) after closing explorer go back to the first tab, go to new task, and type 'explorer.exe' and then ok, it should open explorer again, you may find at some points it will crash again.

Anyway, to answer the question, there are two ways with XP (that I know) with a start up disk and one with out, someone posted the without one as a reply to one of my threads, no doubt someone will again.

With your PC you should have a start up disc (if not, then your dealer is crap, like the idiots who sold my sister her PC without one) its just a floppy disk, turn off your PC, and then start the computer from there, and then the process is very straight forward as it acts like a wizard, it should format the hard drive and reinstall XP, which can take time

What was your forum name 6 months ago, I remember you telling me about that (Seppuku Arts?). However, explorer.exe was never in the task manager and I never figured out what the problem was, anyway my problem is that this PC was bought when Windows 98 was new (Yes I have upgraded it since then.) and therefore does not have a start up disc. All I have is the boot disc, which is pre SP2, and won't work and then even when I unistall SP2 and run the boot disc it just loads Windows all normal. If someone can find the way to do it without then please post detailed instructions on how to ASAP.

I haven't had to install Windows 98 for a long time, so I can't give you a detailed explenation. All I can remember is that I had to get into Dos, change the directory to the CD directory, and type something like Startup.exe or setup.exe.

go into your bios, change the boot order to start from CDRom first, then reboot with the Windows cd in it. Follow the instructions. That's all. The install will let you reformat.

You should be able to format your HD from bios, if you boot holding down F8, that should get you in, but I have had to hold down escape and F12 on some machines.

usually the bios method wil do the trick.

If your totally clean of data retrieval off the drive, why not download a dos on disk and format the drive if your having Win CD blues.

If no-one gives your an answer to a question you have asked, consider:- Is your question clear.- Did you ask nicely.- Are you showing any effort to solve the problem yourself 
