Cinema 4D? Although, I'm not sure $500 would get you a copy - maybe an old version or a second hand copy... but not the latest version.

If you list your choices, it's the best all rounder for price.

Gamespace : never liked the looks of the truespace series
Cinema 4D : Heard a lot of good things, but I've never used it
3DSMax : Too expensive and over engineered
Silo/Houdini/Nendo/Rhino : Just modelling packages, no animation AFAIK

Failing that, if you can get a copy of Lightwave for $500 I'd jump at it.

Ya you can get lightwave for like 450 now.
Cinema 4D? lemme check.

EDIT: Checked it, its $700.
I'll probably go with LightWave unless something(or someone) convinces me otherwise.

EDIT2: God these programs look so much better than Anim8or lol.

EDIT3: Its(lw) actually $495.

I've seen the GUI for Lightwave, it doesn't look happy to me and from the sounds of thing of a guy from another forum who stopped using C4D to do lightwave work, it sounded like he wasn't happy with it, however thats his experience. Like ADR said you can pick up second hand versions of C4D, Version 6 can be picked up for pretty cheap, which is why I own it, but version 8 second hand should be affordable if you can find it, I myself really like Cinema 4D, but thats my opinion.

Well, as you said any others I can think of, look at (and demo's of)
Carrara, TrueSpace (6.6 and below) or SoftImage|XSI, they are in your price range, they're all powerful, but TrueSpace, GameSpace have been known for bugs and the makers of Carrara have been known to release their products buggy and patch them up in updates. All products have demos, try them out.

Yey! I removed the sig...

I am using Truespace 7.1 and have 6.6 as musashi stated 6.6 does it's fair share of crashing, however 7.1 seems much more stable but also seems to run a bit slower, more then likely due to the new realtime dx player/modeling display mode.

No offence (and I mean that) but do you actually NEED to spend $500 on a piece of 3D animation software? In my opinion if you were serious enough about it to spend $500 on the software shouldn't you be consulting a dedicated 3d modelling/animation forum?

and won't change my sig until I get off my oversized behind and finish a project.

Perhaps, but this is a geek culture board so...

EDIT: Can gamespace do particle effects and true reflections?

Maybe you'd be better asking your question in 3D Chat? They'll know more about 3D app specific stuff.

http://www.caligari.com/gamespace/spec.asp

Look there for the features of gamespace.

If you mean particle effects as in physics particles then no there is no physics simulator in gamespace you would need truespace.

If your talking about creating some basic plain key frame animations and exporting in .x, then yes you could texture a plain object with smoke or fire and slightly move the object and key frame the animations yourself for simple basic animations.

It also supports .avi textures to models.

As for true reflections i don't know what that means, are you talking about shader reflections or mirror modeling?

If so no gamespace cannot support shaders.

If your talking about mirror modeling like creating half a head or body and mirroring then welding it together then yes it can do that.

:Edit: Also you should download gamespace light, truespace 5.2, Lightwave, Cinema 4D and any other modeling program you are interested First they all have demo's available. See which ui you like the best before making your decision since they are all different.

Thank you for your post Zone Chicken! True reflections are when an object reflects its surrounds through use of shaders.
