Now that I have a new PC on order, and just picked up Oblivion for my PC (Even though I have the 360 version, Saikoro told me about mods), and would like to update my graphics card. Right now I have an NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500 256mb. Actually, would my graphics card work with Oblivion? If it does, would it be choppy, and what limits could I push it to?

Thanks again,
BNT Games.

Using a 5500, if you set everything to low, it will be playable - but slow. I've actually tried the game on this card, so I'm confident you'll have a similar experience.

What were the specs on the pc besides the graphics card?

I'm running on:

1GB of RAM
Pentium 4 3.06GHz processor
WinXP Home (if that makes a difference between pro, I heard pro was more of a memory hog)
16x DVD/CD-RW Drive (if that makes a loading difference in the game).

But I was mainly asking what kind of card to get, and if it would work, and how well.

well if i had the money i would get an ATI X1900 card but thats just me i have always liked ATI better.

Instead of just learning how to program i am also learning how to model in Wings 3D so if you know of any good tutorials let me know.

It said the ATI X1900 was the best suited card for the game, and I would love to have that card, but $500 is out of my price range...

well i havent tested it with a 5500, but its a fairly old card and as hoopkid says you would have to run it on low regardless of other hardware, if you want to play on medium look at the 6800range or 7800-7900 for max settings.

Hallowed are the ori.

I prefer ATI, but for game compatability the NVIDIA set would be your choice if your looking for more of a gaming experience over many games.

If no-one gives your an answer to a question you have asked, consider:- Is your question clear.- Did you ask nicely.- Are you showing any effort to solve the problem yourself 

Bethesda recommends a GeForce 6800 as the minimum, but i play it just fine with my 6600gt. allthough on the highest settings, the game crashes quite often

you can also test this java program: http://www.nzone.com/content/nzone/srl/nzone_srl.asp?gameid=2608
which will run a (safe) test on your computer and then give you feedback about how well the game will play on your computer.

my forum - now partly finished

I am personally going to buy the GForce 6800. On Ebay you can get one for £70, and don't pay more than £150. There are about 3 versions..Look for the Ultra if you want more speed. On the Doom 3 box it has 6800 as the top end Nvidia card, so it was the best card you could get when Doom 3 was made. The top radeon was the 9800.

Edit: Oh if you have PCI-E you can get an 6800 for £30. Seems that not many people bid for PCI-E yet.

5500, so i am assumin u runnin agp. good timing because i jus was readin about oblivion and fps on some cards (9600 SE, 5200, 5500). Um, the 5500 will play it on all the lowest settings and it will very choppy. I think even the 5750 struggles as bad on all low settings. I would recommend making a nice upgrade. You can buy a real good last resort AGP card. And then 2 years from now if u dont wanna buy another, get the Asrock Dual SATA II motherboard which runs AGP and PCI-E. I got that baby and its amazing. What is the maximum you will pay for a new card?

I do have one PCI-E slot, 3 PCI slots, and no AGP slot.

What is your card memory?

Hmm...no higher than $250.

Ok, would this be good?

well why dont you get one of the old X generation ATI cards like a 800 or something. i have an X600 and it works great for games such as HL2 CS:source things like that so im sure it would work good for oblivion.

Instead of just learning how to program i am also learning how to model in Wings 3D so if you know of any good tutorials let me know.

Something to think about although you may have already.

When i bought my pc it used a x600 ati i upgraded to a x850 pci-e, the psu i have is only 373 watt or some odd number like that.

The x850 required a minimum of a 400 and suggested 450 psu, luckily it has worked for almost a year now with no problems.

But i suggest if you don't already know, make sure you find out what your psu output is and what the card requires minimum before you spend your cash just in case.

Yeah, seems expensive, but it's a good Graphic card. You need a 400 watt power supply with that card like somebody said. Best to get 450.

You're right, that one is a bit expensive, how about this one for the price?
